PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Dartmouth volleyball suffered a 3-0 loss (24-26, 19-25, 18-25) to Penn at the Palestra on Saturday. The Big Green dipped to 9-10 and are 6-4 in Ivy League play, while the Quakers improved to 10-12 and 4-6 in conference action.
Senior Paige Caridi recorded a double-double, ending the day with 12 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Zoe Leonard led both teams with 19 digs, while senior Kayden Cook had 18 assists.
In an incredibly close first set, Penn led for most of the time, even though Dartmouth was always right behind. Tied at 23, a kill put the Quakers at game point, but a kill by junior Emily Astarita made it a 24-24 set. Two Big Green errors, however, were all that Penn needed to earn its first victory.
Dartmouth started set two strongly, going on a four-point run following three Penn errors and a Caridi kill to give it a 5-2 lead. The teams continued to trade points until six straight by the Quakers put the home team up, 18-12. With Penn ahead, 24-17, the Green managed to get two points closer off a pair of errors, but a kill gave set two to the home team.
The score was within a few points in the third set until four straight by the Quakers gave them a 15-11 edge in the middle of the set. After going back-and-forth for a while, a kill by senior Kaira Lujan made it 21-18, but three consecutive Dartmouth errors and a Penn kill ended the match swiftly.
The Big Green's final home weekend will take place next weekend when they host Columbia on Friday and Cornell the next day. Dartmouth will also honor its four seniors, who will be playing at Leede Arena for the last time.
