PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dartmouth volleyball won a five-set thriller (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10) against Brown on the road Friday evening.
The Big Green improved to 12-10 and 9-4 in Ivy League play, while the Bears dipped to 10-15 and 4-9 in conference action. The team's nine Ivy wins is also a program record.
Junior Emily Astarita led the team with 13 kills and added four digs, while freshman Jordan Cornwell had 24 digs and two of the team's four aces. Senior Kayden Cook finished the night with 21 assists.
After Harvard fell to Yale in four and Princeton swept Cornell, the race for the Ivy title is officially on. The Green, the Crimson and the Tigers are all tied for first with just a single match to go.
“I couldn't be more proud of our team tonight,” head coach Erin Lindsey said. “We were not our best in serve receive, but we kept working on attacking different angles. Brown played very good defense and had some tough serves. Kaira Lujan made some exceptional plays throughout the match, especially at the end when we needed it most. We are so excited to be heading to Yale tomorrow to compete for a championship.”
Brown took the first set right from the beginning, winning seven straight points to take an 8-1 lead. Dartmouth would get within two (13-11), but another run by the home team gave the set to the Bears. In set two, the score was tied 11 times. With the score at 21-21, kills by freshman Sierra Lyle, Lujan and junior Danielle Glinka put the Green at game point (24-21). Brown got two points closer, but an error made it a 1-1 match.
The third set started with seven straight Dartmouth points off four Bear errors, an ace by Lyle and a Lujan kill, giving the visitors at 10-6 edge. Dartmouth continued comfortably ahead, making it to game point off a Brown error (24-17). A kill by senior Paige Caridi ended the set.
The Bears turned things around in the fourth to force a fifth set, tying the score and then taking the lead with five consecutive points in the middle of the set (15-12). A pair of kills gave the fourth to the home team.
Tied at seven in the final set, two kills by Astarita and an error by the Bears gave the Green a 10-7 advantage. Following a kill on the other side of the net, Dartmouth scored three more points off Brown error and a kill apiece by Lyle and Astarita. Just two points from victory, the home team made it 13-10, but back-to-back kills by Lujan shut things down.
It all comes down to Saturday's matches. Dartmouth will face ever-tough Yale – who is still just one match out of first – at 5 p.m.
