PROVIDENCE, R.I. — In a physical contest that included a lengthy delay due to an injury in the game's final minutes, the Dartmouth men's soccer team was defeated at Brown 1-0.
The loss drops the Big Green to 11-5-1, 6-1 in the Ivy League while the Bears improve to 10-5-2, 2-3-2 in conference play.
With 5:49 left to play, Brown's Gabe Welp was taken off the field via ambulance after an accidental collision, which held up the game for over 20 minutes.
“We always knew this was going to be a good game,” said Dartmouth head coach Chad Riley. “Brown has always had a good team overall and we knew it would be a good challenge. I thought we had some really good chances late in the first half and some chances that their keeper saved.”
In what was an aggressive first half, where the teams combined for 14 fouls neither Brown or Dartmouth could get anything going offensively. The Big Green had to contend with a stingy Brown defense that had not allowed a goal in the first half all season. Despite the Bears strong defensive front, Dartmouth outshot Brown 9-1 in the first half and registered five shots on goal compared to the Bears' one.
With the scored tied at zero, the Big Green came out hot in the second half by getting shots to the Brown net. The second stanza picked up where the first left off as both teams took to an aggressive style of play to break the scoreless stalemate. By game's end the teams combined for 28 fouls and six yellow cards
With 23 minutes left in the game, Dartmouth goaltender Stefan Cleveland made contact with a Brown player toward the top of the box resulting in a penalty kick for the Bear's Tariq Akeel. On the ensuing PK, Akeel fired a shot to the left of Cleveland as the Big Green net minder went to his right as Akeel netted his fourth goal of the season. For Cleveland, the goal breaks his shutout streak of four games, as the senior goalkeeper made four saves on the night. The loss also snapped Dartmouth's three game winning streak.
Dartmouth made one last ditch effort to net the equalizer with 45 seconds left, Alberto Gorini crossed the ball over to Eric Jayne, who fired a shot that was eventually saved.
The Big Green will find out on Monday who they will face in the opening round of the College Cup. The first round of the tournament will take place later this week.
