HANOVER, N.H. — For the second game in a row, freshman Amadu Kunateh scored the game-winning goal, as the Dartmouth men's soccer team defeated Northeastern 2-0.
With the victory, the Big Green improve to 10-4-1 overall and have now won eight of their last nine games. The loss dropped the Huskies to 3-13-2 in their final game of the 2015-16 season.
In the first half, Northeastern challenged Dartmouth, but netminder James Hickok did not allow the Huskies to get on the scoreboard. With 28 minutes left to play in the half, Hickok made a nice save with traffic in front of the net; he finished the night with five stops.
“I thought James had a great game,” said Big Green head coach Chad Riley. “He was composed back there in some scary moments. I think he came off his line well and he handled some crosses and direct kicks very well.”
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, setting up what would be a productive second half for the Dartmouth offense. Just before the 75th minute, Alberto Gorini passed the ball from the top of the box to Kunateh, who was positioned in the front of Northeastern goalkeeper, Jonathan Thuresson. Kunateh with his back turned, kicked the ball in backwards for his fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for the Big Green.
“When he gets in the box, he scores,” Riley said. “He's very dangerous in the box and the good thing was there were two or three guys in that spot and he was the one to finish. It was a great service from Alberto Gorini, who's been playing really well too.”
Dartmouth continued to dictate play for most of the second half. In the 84th minute, the Green added an insurance goal when Eduvie Ikoba, fired a shot that sailed just above the Huskies' netminder to give Dartmouth a 2-0 lead.
For the remainder of the game, the Big Green defense kept Northeastern off the scoreboard sealing their fifth consecutive victory at home.
Dartmouth returns to action this Saturday when they host Cornell at Burnham Field at 4 p.m. With a victory against the Big Red, the Green can clinch their second consecutive Ivy League title.
