HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League announced its weekly award winners in men's basketball this afternoon and Dartmouth guard
Guilien Smith was chosen for his performances in road games at Cal State Bakersfield and New Hampshire. This is the first weekly honor for the 6-2 freshman from Boston, Massachusetts, and fourth for a Big Green player in the six weeks of the 2015-16 season thus far.
Smith had a bit of a slow start to his collegiate career, going scoreless in the first six games before connecting on a three-pointer at Stanford on Dec. 12. That one shot seemed to break the dam as he collected 13 points against the Roadrunners before leading Dartmouth with 12 more at UNH on Saturday.
In the 69-62 loss at CSUB, Smith came off the bench to hit 5-of-8 field goals, including a pair of three-pointers, plus canned his lone foul shot on a three-point play while collecting four rebounds. His 13 points were one shy from leading the team. The next time on the court, Smith played a season-high 23 minutes in a reserve role again as he was the only Big Green player to score in double figures in a 76-56 loss to the Wildcats. On the other end of the floor, the product of Catholic Memorial contributed three steals as well.
Smith finished the week averaging 12.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a game while shooting 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from the floor with three triples and converting all four free throws.
The other three Rookie of the Week awards bestowed to Dartmouth players all went to
Evan Boudreaux, the Big Green's leading scorer and rebounder through nine games.
Dartmouth (3-6), which hosts Longwood (3-9) on Tuesday evening in Leede Arena, is coming off a four-game road trip during which it lost the last three contests. The game will be streamed live via Big Green Insider on the Ivy League Digital Network with Jay Burnham calling the action. The opening tap is scheduled for 7 p.m.
