POTSDAM, N.Y. – Six goals by five different skaters propelled top-seeded Clarkson past eighth-seeded Dartmouth women's hockey, 6-0, in the first game of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal in Cheel Arena on Friday evening. The Big Green dipped to 13-14-2 on the season, while the Golden Knights improved to 23-9-3.
Clarkson found the back of the net twice in the span of a minute to take a 2-0 lead just seven minutes into the first period. Amanda Titus opened scoring with her power-play marker at 5:52, while leading goal scorer Cayley Mercer netted her 21st of the season at 7:06.
The home team had 12 more attempts before the period ended, but Robyn Chemago got in the way of eight of them to keep Clarkson at bay. The sophomore had a busy 20 minutes between the pipes, stopping 15-of-17 shots sent her way.
The Golden Knights opened the middle stanza with a goal at 4:57 when Daniella Matteucci fired from the blueline and pocketed the puck in the right side of the net. Clarkson increased its lead to four at 9:15 following a Brielle Bellerive tally and Genevieve Bannon tacked on one more at 17:34 before the game headed to intermission.
Dartmouth's best opportunity at a goal came at 7:25 in the final period when a shot by senior Samantha Zeiss was stopped by a diving Shea Tiley, but the rebounded puck almost slid into the net while Clarkson's goalie was rolling around on the ice. The puck was saved in the knick of time by a Golden Knight diving over Tiley. With 16 seconds remaining in the game, Mercer scored her second of the evening to give Clarkson a 6-0 victory.
The Golden Knights outshot the Big Green, 58-37. Chemago had a busy time in net, making double-digit saves in each period to total 43 stops throughout the game. Tiley earned the shutout and ended the game with 21 saves. Zeiss and Junior Lindsey Allen led the Green with four shots on goal apiece.
Dartmouth will return to Cheel on Saturday at 4 p.m. for the second game of the best-of-three series.
