HANOVER, N.H. — Junior Katie McEachern led the Dartmouth softball team with five runs batted in, — which included a grand slam in the nightcap — as the Big Green blanked Brown 4-0 and 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at Dartmouth Softball Park.
With the win, Dartmouth (21-14, 14-2 Ivy) needs just one win to clinch the Ivy League North Division — for the third straight year — after taking both games today and Harvard dropping the series finale to Yale (3-1). The Crimson will head to Hanover for two games next Saturday before closing out the regular season in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Sunday. Dartmouth also needs two wins to secure home field advantage of the Ivy League Tournament for the second straight year.
Less than 24 hours after suffering a tough blow at the hands of the Bears, senior Kristen Rumley and junior Morgan McCalmon put on an All-Ivy worthy performance inside the circle. The duo allowed four hits each with Rumley striking out 10 and McCalmon with six.
Dartmouth still had a few offensive hiccups as they stranded 15 runners, but got a big sigh of relief on McEachern's grand slam in the fifth inning of the weekend finale.
Rumley's 10-strikeout performance was the first time she reached the plateau this season. Last season, she had 11 K's twice with the latter against the Bears on Apr. 20, 2014. In her career, she has reached double-figure strikeouts 11 times with her career-best of 15 against Elon on Mar. 23, 2013.
The Big Green broke their scoreless streak —which was all of five innings — with an RBI double to center field by sophomore Maddie Damore in the opening frame. Rumley allowed one hit in each of the first three stanzas before retiring the next nine straight batters.
In the third, the Big Green added two runs on three hits. McEachern singled to left field to lead off the frame and then moved to third on Damore's second two-bagger in consecutive at bats. She would then score on a sacrifice fly to left by sophomore Karen Chaw. The second run was off an RBI double to left by Rumley.
Dartmouth scored its fourth run in the sixth on a single to left field by McEachern and plated leadoff hitter sophomore Chloe Madill. The center fielder reached base on a double to left field.
Brown threatened in the seventh with a double to right field by Trista Chavez, but Rumley struck out two of the next three batters to complete her 13th win of the season.
In the finale, it was a pitcher's duel through the fourth as Orona and McCalmon did a fine job not allowing any runs to cross the plate. Dartmouth struggled with runners in scoring position in all four innings and twice left the bases loaded. It wasn't until the fifth when the wheels started to turn for the Big Green offense.
Damore singled through the right side to lead off the frame. She was then forced out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Chaw. Rumley then singled and advanced to second on the relay throw in to put runners back in position.
With one out, McCalmon laid down a perfectly-placed suicide squeeze that froze the Brown defense and allowed pinch runner, freshman Brittany Mann, to score. Dartmouth loaded the bases for the third straight inning on an RBI single up the middle by Madill and then classmate Alyssa Jorgensen reached on an error.
Back in the Dartmouth fourth, McEachern was in the same situation but popped out to the shortstop on an inside pitch. The Ivy League's home run leader would not be fooled again and drilled a shot over the left field wall and cleared the bases to give Dartmouth a six-run edge.
Brown's Jessica Cherness took the loss in the opener and allowed four runs (three earned) in six innings. Orona pitched five innings of the second game and surrendered six runs (two earned) on 10 hits. Chavez led the Bears with three hits.
Dartmouth will travel to Boston on Tuesday for an all-important in-region game against the Terriers of Boston University. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
