PRINCETON, N.J. — Senior Kristen Rumley becomes the first pitcher to be crowned the Ivy League Pitcher of the Year for a third time. She joins Player of the Year junior Katie McEachern and Coach of the Year Shannon Doepking as major award winners announced by the Ivy office on Tuesday.
Joining Rumley and McEachern on the All-Ivy First Team is sophomore catcher Karen Chaw, who like Rumley, was a unanimous selection. Classmate Maddie Damore was the lone Big Green on the second-team and junior Morgan McCalmon on the honorable mention team.
Prior to Rumley's tenure, four other pitchers claimed the award two times. Cornell's Elizabeth Dalrymple and Harvard's Rachel Brown won the award back-to-back times before Rumley began her reign in 2013. Rumley's 15 wins led the Ivy League this season, along with her 1.99 earned run average.
Rumley owns the Dartmouth career record with 60 wins, 658 strikeouts, 19 shutouts, 58 complete games, 649.2 innings pitched and 125 appearances. She is second in earned run average at 2.09 behind Danica Giugliano '04 at 1.86.
This season, Rumley's 15 wins rank her fourth in Dartmouth's individual season record along with second in shutouts (8), fourth in innings pitched (151.1) and fourth in appearances (30).
The Katy, Texas, native tossed Dartmouth's fifth no-hitter on Mar. 28 at Columbia, an 8-0 win for the Big Green. The southpaw struck out nine Columbia batters and then came back with a two-hitter in the nightcap. Rumley has reached 100+ pitches in three occasions this season, turning out a terrific performance in game one of the Ivy League Championship Series allowing one run in a complete-game win over Penn on May 2.
Last season, Morgan McCalmon became the first Dartmouth player to claim the Ivy League Player of the Year award. Katie McEachern becomes the second Big Green to win the award and seventh time a school has repeated the recognition. Entering the NCAA Tournament, McEachern is hitting .449 with 10 home runs and 28 runs batted in.
Her batting average and home runs lead the Ivy League. In addition, she owns the league's top ranking in runs (41), walks (23) and hits (46). If the season had ended, McEachern would take over Dartmouth's single-season record, pacing McCalmon, who hit .389 in 2014.
Once Ancient Eight play commenced, McEachern hit .500 with 27 hits, five home runs, and 16 RBIs in 20 games.
The San Diego product has Dartmouth's all-time career record in home runs with 28, a .362 batting average, 96 runs batted in and is second with 90 runs scored.
Doepking is the fourth rookie head coach to lead an Ivy League team to the postseason. She is the second Ivy coach to have her team qualify for the NCAA Tournament in her first year at the helm; the last was Princeton's Trina Salcido in 2008, when the Tigers fell to UMass and Lehigh.
Under Doepking, Dartmouth hit .286 as a team and led the Ivy League in home runs (38) and slugging percentage (.443). The former professional catcher and Tennessee standout saw her team post the lowest team ERA in the conference (2.78), most strikeouts (228) and best fielding percentage (.968).
Transitioning from right field to behind the plate, Chaw tops the team with 29 runs batted in and is second with seven home runs. Chaw hit .322 and hit home runs in three consecutive games on two occasions. Of her seven homers, six came in league play where Chaw batted .431 and drove in 24 runs.
At first base, Damore hit .308 with six home runs and 27 runs batted in. In league play, she hit .303 with four home runs and drove home 19 RBIs. Against Princeton, she had four RBIs.
McCalmon — also a 10-game winner — posts a 2.43 ERA in 89.1 innings inside the circle. The 2014 Ivy League Player of the Year has made 22 appearances with 85 strikeouts as a junior. The Norman, Oklahoma, native is sixth in Big Green career wins with 24. At the plate, McCalmon set the Big Green's single-season record with a .389 average. McEachern is on pace to break the hitting record.
Dartmouth will meet ninth-seeded Florida State on Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m. on ESPN 3 at the Tallahassee Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
