INNING-BY-INNING STORYLINES
Third Time's A Charm: Kristen Rumley becomes the first Ivy League hurler to win the conference's Pitcher of the Year award three times. Prior to Rumley's tenure, four other pitchers claimed the award twice. Cornell's Elizabeth Dalrymple and Harvard's Rachel Brown both won the award back-to-back years before Rumley began her reign in 2013.
Leader of the Pack: Rumley's 15 wins led the Ivy League this season, along with her 1.99 earned run average. Dartmouth finished the season with a 2.90 team ERA with junior Morgan McCalmon behind Rumley with a 2.43 mark.
Miss San Diego: Last season, Morgan McCalmon became the first Dartmouth player to claim the Ivy League Player of the Year award. Katie McEachern becomes the second Big Green to win the award and seventh time a school has repeated the recognition. Entering the NCAA Tournament, McEachern is hitting .449 with 10 home runs and 28 runs batted in. Her batting average and home runs lead the Ivy League. In addition, she owns the league's top ranking in runs (41), walks (23) and hits (46). If the season had ended, McEachern would take over Dartmouth's single-season record, pacing McCalmon, who hit .389 in 2014.
The Queen's Dugout: Doepking is the fourth rookie head coach to lead an Ivy League team to the postseason. She is the second Ivy coach to have her team qualify for the NCAA Tournament in her first-year at the helm; the last was Princeton's Trina Salcido in 2008, when the Tigers fell to UMass and Lehigh. Under Doepking, Dartmouth hit .286 as a team and led the Ivy League in home runs (38) and slugging percentage (.443). The former professional catcher and Tennessee standout saw her team post the lowest team ERA in Ivy play (2.78), most strikeouts (228) and best fielding percentage (.968).
Da More, More, More: Sophomore Maddie Damore was named to the All-Ivy Second Team. At first base, Damore hit .308 with six home runs and 27 runs batted in. In league play, she hit .303 with four home runs and drove home 19 RBIs. Against Princeton, she had four RBIs.
Old Friends and New Faces: The Tallahassee Regional will bring some new faces to the Big Green while also a friendly old face to the mix. Dartmouth has never faced Florida State or South Carolina in competition, but are 1-0 against Central Florida. The Big Green and Knights played on Mar. 19, 2002, an 8-5 victory by the Big Green in Kissimmee, Florida.
No Advantage Here: Katie McEachern and Maddie Damore — both right-handed batters — are hitting well off left-handed pitching. McEachern is 10-for-20 (.500) while Damore is 9-for-25 (.360). Karen Chaw is the third best hitter against lefties at 6-for-17 (.353).
Empty Nest: Karen Chaw is hitting .400 with the bases empty this season. At 12-for-30, Chaw has hit four of her seven home runs with the bases unoccupied. McEachern is another player who is dangerous in open base situations. She tops the team with a .446 average (29-for-65). As the leadoff hitter, McEachern has knocked four of her 10 homers with the bases empty. Three of those homers were hit to begin an inning.
Living Dangerously: Dartmouth has scored 74 runs with two outs. McEachern has 15 two-out RBIs while Chaw and Rumley each have 11. Of their 38 home runs, 12 have come with two outs.
Multi-Hit Affairs: Dartmouth has 77 multi-hit games and is led by McEachern with 14. The team is still looking for its first four-hit game of the season, but the team has had 11 three-hit contests.
Runs! Runs! Runs!: Karen Chaw and Kathy Dzienkowski are only two players this season to record a five-RBI game. Chaw has accomplished the feat twice, while Dzienkowski has done it once. Chaw had five RBIs against Maryland (3/25) and Cornell (4/4). She hit a home run in both games. For Dzienkowski, she smacked two home runs in a win over South Carolina State. She was also named Ivy Player of the Week for her efforts at the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, South Carolina.
Hit Me With Your Best Shot: Pat Benatar said it best in 1980, 'Hit me with your best shot / Fire away'. Well, for Katie McEachern the move to Ivy League play has been exactly that. McEachern hit .500 in Ancient Eight games with 27 hits, five home runs and 16 RBIs in 20 games. Karen Chaw was right behind her with a .431 average with six homers and 24 RBIs. The Big Green attacked the ball and hit 314 as a squad with 24 home runs and 114 runs batted in.
LvL/RvR: The lefty-lefty situation has done wonders for Kristen Rumley, as hitters are hitting below the Mendoza line against her at .184. The same can be said for righty Morgan McCalmon. She is swallowing up right-handed batters to the tune of a .190 average.
Grounded For Life: Kristen Rumley has forced hitters to ground out 232 times this season with three double plays. The opposite can be said for Morgan McCalmon, who is more of a fly-ball pitcher. McCalmon has forced 113 fly outs and has a 1.8 fly-to-ground ratio.
Defend To The End: Dartmouth is 17-1 when holding a lead after the sixth inning. After the fifth, the team is 15-1.
Runs Win Games: Dartmouth is 10-3 when scoring between 3-5 runs. When the squad puts up between 6-9, they are 9-2. Dartmouth has yet to drop a game when hitting double digits (3-0).
First to Score Wins: The Big Green is 19-6 when scoring first and 11-4 when they put a run on the board in the first inning. Dartmouth has outscored opponents 31-21 in the first frame and 30-10 in the second. The fifth inning has always been a friendly frame for the Big Green, who led the opposition, 36-20 in runs during the stanza.
It's a Sprint, Not a Marathon: Dartmouth is 4-0 in games that take less than 1:30 to complete. In games that are between 1:30 and 2:00, the Big Green are 16-7. However, in marathon games (2:00 or longer), Dartmouth is 5-9.
Who is William Langland?: Dartmouth has walked in all but six games this season, with a season-best seven free passes against George Washington (3/24). So like Mr. Langland said in 1370 “Patience is a Virtue”.
Into the Woods: Dartmouth sported a 10-2 record in the friendly confines of Dartmouth Softball Park this season. Since the facility opened in 2012, the Big Green have achieved a 34-16 (.680) record and have a winning record in three of the four seasons.
Record at Dartmouth Softball Park
2012: 4-8 (.333)
2013: 8-4 (.666)
2014: 12-2 (.857)
2015: 10-2 (.833)
Ball? Party of Four? Dartmouth has walked 87 times this season, which ranks fourth in the Ivy League. The team has also reached base 36 times with a hit batter. Katie McEachern leads the Big Green in both categories with 24 free passes and 17 plunks.
D-######: Dartmouth leads the Ivies and is 48th nationally with a defensive fielding percentage of (.968). The Big Green have eight players with a .950 or better percentage, all have started at least half of the games this season. McEachern leads the team with 82 assists and has a .956 mark in the field. Inside the pitchers circle, Rumley has 49 assists with one error and posts the best pitching fielding percentage among starters.
SCOUTING REPORTS
Scouting Florida State - This is the 16th consecutive season that the Noles have reached the regional round and are one of the nine schools to make the NCAA tournament every year since 2000. On Saturday, the Seminoles defeated Pittsburgh in the ACC Championship 6-2. Prior to its win in the league tournament, FSU won its third consecutive ACC regular season championship and claimed the top spot in the ACC Championship for the 12th time in program history. Senior Lacey Waldrop was announced a Top 26 Finalist for the 2015 USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Year by The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball. The senior from Chester, Va., earned the national award in 2014 and has posted an impressive 2015 season as well. This season, Waldrop is 28-6 with a 1.49 earned run average. Jessica Burroughs is the ace-in-waiting and was named the ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player after relieving Waldrop, who allowed Pitt to tie the game in the third. Burroughs, shut down the Panthers en route to the win, her 16th of the season. At 16-5 with a 2.33 earned run average, Florida State has a real one-two punch inside the circle to combat Rumley and McCalmon. Morgan Klaevemann leads the Noles with a .401 batting average. Jessica Warner returned to the lineup after missing the ACC semifinals game and picked up a pinch-hit two RBIs double in the win over Pitt. Warner leads the team with 16 home runs and 50 runs batted in. Florida State sports three players with 40+ RBIs. Alex Powers and Maddie O'Brien have 44 and 40, respectively.
Scouting UCF - The Knights are another team that threatens in the circle. Shelby Turnier, the American Pitcher of the Year and a top ten finalist for the 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, is half of UCF's dynamic duo in the circle. Her 0.75 ERA leads the nation. Mackenzie Audas, a unanimous first-team All-AAC selection, is a solid counterpart, as her 0.95 ERA ranks third in the NCAA. The Knights, who have been ranked for 11 straight weeks since making their national poll debut on Feb. 17, have had the lowest combined earned run average for eight straight weeks. Defensively the Black and Gold have been solid, as their .979 fielding percentage ranks second in the nation. Samantha McCloskey's walk-off home run in the American Athletic Conference Championship game gave UCF both the regular season and the tournament title for the first time in school history. Like the Big Green, UCF has hit 38 home runs as a team. Kahley Novack leads the team with 58 hits. Jessica Ujvari has the Knights lead in RBIs with 37.
Scouting South Carolina - The Gamecocks are making their 18th NCAA Tournament and second straight appearance in Tallahassee. Alaynie Page leads the Gamecocks with a .446 average, 15 home runs, 11 doubles seven triples and 45 runs batted in. In the circle, Nickie Blue and Jule Sarratt will be a tough duo. Blue is 20-7 with a 1.74 ERA while Sarratt is 17-12 with a 4.23 ERA.
