Dartmouth (25-16) will take on South Carolina (37-21) in the consolation game on Saturday at noon.
The Seminoles scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Morgan Klaevemann singled to leadoff the frame and then stole second. The hosts added a second runner on a five-pitch walk to Jessica Warren. Following a ground out to Rumley, Ellie Cooper singled through the left side and scored both runners.
Dartmouth threatened in the second, as FSU pitcher Lacey Waldron had issues locating the strike zone. Rumley picked up a one-out single to center field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kelsey Miller drew a six-pitch walk and then moved on another wild pitch by Waldron.
The Big Green loaded the bases on the second base on balls of the frame, as Chloe Madill took the free pass on five pitches. With all three bases occupied, Tiffany Dyson got the tail end of a change-up that was lined to second base and caught the runner off the bag for a double play.
In the second, Rumley allowed a leadoff single to Alex Kossoff, but then struck out the next three batters to end the frame.
Dartmouth put runners in scoring position once again in the third. With one out, Katie McEachern walked on four pitches. Megan Averitt then reached on a sacrifice bunt, but the ball was thrown into right field allowing both to advance an extra base. Dartmouth reloaded the bases on a walk to Chaw, but Rumley grounded out to Waldrop to end the frame.
FSU put a pair of runners on with a one-out triple by Jessica Warren and a walk to Powers before the sky opened up and the tarp was pulled onto the field. Play resumed after a 3 hour 42 minute rain delay. Rumley showed no fatigue as she got Bailey Schinella to ground out.
In the fourth, Dartmouth scored its first NCAA Tournament run on a single up the middle by McEachern. The Big Green inning started with a leadoff walk to Miller and then a two-out free pass to Mann. The walk by Waldrop, her sixth of the game, chased the ACC Pitcher of the Year out of the game.
Waldrop tossed 3.2 innings and allowed one run on one hit with six walks and three strikeouts.
Jessica Burroughs — the ACC Tournament MVP — allowed the single by McEachern and then got pinch-hitter Madison Smith to ground out to second. Burroughs (17-5) finished the remaining 3.1 frames and fanned four batters and allowed one hit.
With Dartmouth trailing 3-1, FSU regained a two-run advantage with an RBI double to center field by Klaevemann in the fourth. Rumley bounced back after surrendering the run with a strikeout to Maddie O'Brien and a line out to Dyson at second from Warren.
Neither team scored in the fifth, but the Seminoles put a runner on second with a leadoff double by Alex Powers, who moved to third on a fly out by Schinella. During the inning, Dyson made another great play at second base, catching a line drive from Cooper.
In the sixth, Klaevemann singled up the middle and then stole before O'Brien hit a ball over the right field wall to put FSU up 5-1.
Rumley (15-11) went the distance for the Big Green and surrendered all five runs on 10 hits, but had good control and struck out five.
Klaevemann led the Seminoles with three hits and added an RBI. Cooper and O'Brien each had a pair of runs batted in.
Florida State will clash with UCF in the first game of the second day of the regional at 10 a.m.
Quotes
Dartmouth Head Coach Shannon Doepking:
Opening Statement:
“It's always hard to lose a game, but you kind of tip your hat to Florida State. They did a lot of things well today, and you give credit where credit is due. When you look back on it, we left a lot of people on base and timely hitting is the key to the game at this time of the year.”
On seemingly grabbing momentum after the 3 hour, 42 minute rain delay:
“I thought we did a nice job staying disciplined at the plate and I thought we did a nice job making [Florida State starter Lacey Waldrop] throw strikes and she struggled doing that. That's where you see eight left on base. I think we were one hit away from breaking that thing open and we didn't have it.”
On frustrations of not scoring runs against a pitcher like Lacey Waldrop:
“I don't know if it's frustrating, I think it's more exciting. I think it's exciting for us to see the position we've put ourselves into. That's all we ask of our kids, to put ourselves in position to win a ballgame and I think we did that. You get a couple hits here and there and that changes the whole perspective of that game.”
On Saturday's elimination game against South Carolina:
“They have good pitching and a kid that throws the ball really, really hard and they have a good offense. They're going to be a tough team and that's what you expect this time of year.”
Kristen Rumley, Sr., P
On what was working for her on the mound tonight:
“Just mixing up the game. Coach was calling a great game mixing it up here and there, so just keeping them on their toes is really what was the name of the game.”
Katie McEachern, Jr., SS
On recording the first NCAA Tournament RBI in Dartmouth history:
“Honestly, I didn't even know that or realize that. When I was up at the plate I was just thinking about getting on base since that's been a lot of my role this year, just getting on and keeping the momentum going. It is pretty exciting and that's a fun thing to do, but I wish there had been more. We had so many opportunities.”
