HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's outdoor track & field team heads to Philadelphia this weekend with high expectations.
The Big Green and seven other programs will descend upon Franklin Field Saturday and Sunday for the 2015 Ivy League Outdoor Track & Field Heptagonal Championship.
Led by the Marjorie and Herbert Chase '30 Head Coach of Women's Track and Field Sandy Ford-Centonze — now in her 23rd season in Hanover — Dartmouth was the 2014 team runner-up at Yale and brings back a wealth of talented individuals this season, seeking the program's first title since 1977.
Leading the way will be junior Kaitlin Whitehorn who became the first woman ever to win the 100m and high jump in a career let alone a weekend, when she accomplished the feat a little more than an hour apart on Sunday afternoon last year at Yale.
Whitehorn, Sara Kikut, Anna Kikut and Jennifer Meech comprised the group who earned Second-Team All-Ivy League honors in the 4x100, while the 4x800 team that won the 2014 event title will see Meghan Grela, Elizabeth Markowitz and Meggie Donovan return for a chance to repeat.
Dana Giordano won her first outdoor title last season in the 1500m, pushing the string of consecutive champions from Dartmouth in the event to three.
In all, six individuals and one relay group claimed event titles for the Big Green in 2014, but in the end it was Harvard winning its first team championship since 1990, edging out second-place Dartmouth, 162 points to 149. The finish was the best by the women since taking second in 2000. The 149 points demolished the previous program record of 116 set in 1996 also in New Haven.
Distance coach Courtney Jaworski and middle distance assistant coach Scott Phelps continue to cultivate winning attitudes in their respective groups, a trait that can be contagious across the entire team.
First-year coaches Tim Wunderlich '09 and Jeff Forino have also done great work with both the jumpers and throwers, respectively, this season, which also gives Dartmouth more opportunities for scoring.
The Green and White have run well this spring in meets across the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic and on their training trip to the Southeast with each weekend of competition leading to this particular meet in the City of Brotherly Love.
