THIS WEEKEND
The Big Green will host the Dartmouth Tournament, playing WVU on Friday and UConn on Sunday. The two visiting teams will face each other on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth opened 2015 in sunny California at the SDSU/USD Invitational, taking on TCU at San Diego State on Friday before traveling down the road to San Diego to face Pacific and the host Toreros. The Green fell in all three matches, 3-0. After leading the team in digs against all three opponents, Zoe Leonard was named to the All-Tournament Team.
SCOUTING THE MOUTAINEERS
WVU already has two of its four season-opening tournaments out of the way, attending the Michigan Invitational on Aug. 28-29 and the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational the following weekend. The Mountaineers won their first match against Oakland, 3-2, before dropping all three sets to both George Washington and Michigan. At IUPUI, they fell, 3-1, to Eastern Michigan and 3-2 to the host, sandwiching a 3-1 win over Charlotte in-between the losses.
SCOUTING UCONN
The Huskies are entering their third week of the season with a winning record. Their first tournament, the UConn Invite, was a tough one, as they blanked Hartford but fell to Rhode Island and Syracuse by scores of 3-1. The Dog Pound Challenge the next weekend proved to be much more successful, as UConn went undefeated, taking down Bryant, 3-1, before defeating UMBC and James Madison, 3-0.
LINDSEY AND CO.
Having led the Big Green since the 2010-11 season, head coach Erin Lindsey has compiled a record of 42-58 and a 17-39 Ivy League mark as she enters her fifth year. Joining her on the bench are first-year assistants Jon Haruguchi and Aylene Ilkson.
CAPTAINS
The 20-player squad, which is made up of 14 returnees and six freshmen, are led by captains Paige Caridi, Kayden Cook and Kaira Lujan, who are all entering their final year on the court. Last season, Caridi was first on the team in solo blocks (11), tied for first in kills (268) and second in digs (279). Cook had 83 digs and eight blocks, and was second on the team with 427 assists and 18 service aces, while Lujan was third among the Big Green in both kills (138) and total blocks (50).
FRESH FACES
Joining the Big Green to start their collegiate careers are Samantha Bozoian, Jordan Cornwell, Zoe Leonard, Sierra Lyle, Catherine Shepherd and Lida Vandermeer.
