HANOVER, N.H. — Troy Moo Penn put the perfect trajectory on a shot from 22 yards out, bending it over the Dartmouth goalkeeper and under the crossbar in the 54th minute for the lone goal of the night, lifting visiting Colgate (2-1-1) to the 1-0 triumph over the Big Green in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 1,812 at Burnham Field. The Raiders enjoyed their second straight victory after recording a loss and tie in their first two games of 2015, while handing Dartmouth (1-1-1) its first defeat.
A Big Green foul deep in its own territory and near the far sideline gave Colgate one of its few true scoring opportunities of the evening. Ethan Kutler quickly put the ball in play as the Big Green were preparing their defense, and Moo Penn fired his shot over everyone but with enough top spin to find the back of the net at 53:14.
The goal was one of just five shots the Raiders were able to fire off, only three of which went on goal. Dartmouth goalkeeper
James Hickok, who had not allowed a goal in over 150 minutes this season, came away with two saves, but could not get a hand on Moo Penn's shot.
The Big Green offense, meanwhile, consistently put pressure on Colgate keeper Ricky Brown, who had six saves in recording his first shutout of the year. In all, Dartmouth had 11 shots on the night.
During the final five minutes, the Green amped up the pressure and had two terrific scoring chances. First, sophomore
Matt Greer one-timed a long cross over the defense and sent a one-hopper toward the inside of the left post, only to have Brown make a diving save. Less than a minute later, sophomore
Matt Danilack punched a shot on goal from the left side of the box, but Brown was there once again to thwart the effort.
“There were a lot of things to be proud of tonight, but we could have created better chances with the dangerous spots we put Colgate in,” said head coach
Chad Riley after the game. “On the goal there seemed to be a bit of confusion on our part, but I need to see the video to really understand what broke down there. The performance overall was pretty good, but now we need to marry that with being a little bit more ruthless in the attacking third.”
The first half was controlled by the Big Green as they took six shots to just two for the visitors. The best scoring chance in the opening stanza came little more than 15 minutes into the contest when senior
Alberto Gorini took a pass from freshman
Amadu Kunateh and fired a shot from just inside the right of the box nine yards deep. Again Brown corralled the attempt with a diving effort inside the near post.
Dartmouth will play again on Sunday at Albany (3-1) at 4 p.m. The Great Danes have won three straight by defeating Rhode Island, George Mason and UMass by a combined scored of 7-0. The game will be streamed live on AmericaEast.tv. Colgate will not play again until next Friday evening then it hosts Air Force at 7 p.m.
