NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Dartmouth volleyball started out its second Ivy League road trip of the season with a 3-0 loss to Yale on Friday night (17-25, 9-25, 20-25). The Big Green are now 6-8 overall and 0-4 in conference action, while the Bulldogs improved to 10-3 and 3-1.
Senior Emily Astarita led with her eight kills and had two of the team's five service aces, tacking on eight digs and two block assists as well. Sophomore Sierra Lyle had nine digs to lead the Big Green and senior Molly Kornfeind had a .308 hitting percentage.
"We got out of our comfort zone early with our passing and serving and it took us a long time to get back into any type of rhythm," head coach Gilad Doron said. "We did play better and more aggressively in game thre, but just didn't have enough to make it a game against a very solid Yale team who played us in every aspect of the game. We have another opportunity to play again and I know our team will be ready for Brown tomorrow."
The first part of the first set was evenly matched; although Yale got the first point, a kill by senior Kaira Lujan put Dartmouth on the board. The Bulldogs pulled three points ahead, but the Big Green picked up three of their own off a kill by Astarita, an ace by Lyle and an error by the opponent to make it a 4-4 set. Yale went on a 9-1 run (13-5), but Dartmouth managed to get within four points (13-9). Yale took control of the remainder of the set, shutting it down not long after (25-17).
Yale won the first three points of the second set, but Dartmouth took four of the next five points off kills by junior Sara Lindquist and Kornfeind and an error on the other side of the net (4-4). The Bulldogs took a bit of a lead, but the Big Green got within four thanks to kills by Astarita and Kornfeind (11-7). From there, however, Yale took the lead and ran with it, scoring the next 13 points (24-7). Dartmouth scored twice more following kills by Lujan and Lindquist, but a Bulldog kill ended set two (25-9).
Dartmouth returned to the court for the third set as a different team, winning the first point from an Astarita kill and only getting better from there. The teams traded points until Yale won a handful in a row to make it 10-6. That lead was short-lived, though, as the Big Green took the next four points to tie the score at 10-all. There were two more ties before the home team started to pull away (19-15), but four consecutive points by Dartmouth following a pair of kills by senior Danielle Glinka and two Yale errors made it 19-19. The Bulldogs won the next six of seven points – committing one error during that time – to end the match.
Dartmouth will return to the court on Saturday with a 5 p.m. match at Brown.
