HANOVER, N.H. – A backhand shot by senior Eleni Tebano with 57.7 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Dartmouth women's hockey team over No. 10/10 Princeton, 3-2. The victory gives the Big Green their first win of the 2016-17 season, while Laura Schuler also got her first win as head coach of the program.
The last time Dartmouth won in overtime was on Nov. 2, 2012, when it defeated Yale by a score of 5-4.
“I am really excited for our girls,” Schuler said after the game. “They played their hearts out today and they really committed to buying into the game plan and they found a way to win.”
Seven different Dartmouth players ended the game with a point. Senior Emma Korbs and freshman Rose Falzone got the first two goals, while senior Kennedy Ottenbreit and freshmen Sabrina Huett and Sydney Hill picked up helpers. Junior Morgan Turner assisted on the winner, getting her first assist of her career. Senior Robyn Chemago had another huge game in net, ending up with 45 saves.
Dartmouth (1-5-0, 1-4-0) got things started early, scoring twice in the first eight minutes of play. Less than four minutes in, the Big Green got their first power-play opportunity when a Tiger was put in the box and, just 18 seconds after the call, a few great passes between Ottenbreit and Korbs resulted in the latter's first marker of the season.
Four minutes later, Huett broke up a Princeton (4-3-1, 2-3-1) play in the Tigers' zone and got the puck to Hill, who found Falzone waiting by the unmanned left pipe. A quick reaction by Falzone gave the freshman her first goal of her collegiate career. Although Princeton had a 16-7 shot advantage, Dartmouth headed into the second period up by two.
The Tigers had an impressive start to the second period, getting one goal back two minutes in before tying the score just over a minute later. Both tallies were credited to Karlie Lund. The teams rode out the remaining 16 minutes tied at 2-2.
Both Dartmouth and Princeton returned to the ice for the third with its eye on that deciding third goal. After the Big Green got called for a penalty late in the period, Turner swept in, intercepted a Tiger cross and carried the puck down the right side, going for the shorthanded goal, but was stopped by Alysia DaSilva in net. Princeton had two penalties called almost simultaneously, giving Dartmouth a two-man advantage. The Big Green had a flurry of shots, but DaSilva got in the way of all of them, sending the game to overtime. Dartmouth outshot Princeton, 14-9, in the third.
The home team had 37 seconds of 5-on-3 play to start the period, but Princeton was able to kill the opportunity. With just 57 seconds left on the clock, Tebano got the puck in Dartmouth territory, passed to Turner in the crease and, before DaSilva could cover her left post, shot to the left to end the game.
The Tigers outshot the Big Green, 47-25. The home team went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Princeton was 1-for-7.
Dartmouth will wait over two weeks until its next games. The Big Green will head to Orono for a pair of contests against Maine on Nov. 28-29.
