THIS WEEK
Having played just two games so far this month, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will return to the ice after two weeks away to take on Maine in a pair of road contests on Nov. 28-29. Seven of the Big Green's next eight games will be played on the road.
LAST TIME OUT
Two weeks ago, Dartmouth hosted ECAC Hockey rivals Quinnipiac and Princeton, both of which were ranked at the time. The Big Green went 1-1 on the weekend.
Against Quinnipiac
Dartmouth fell to No. 8/8 Quinnipiac, 2-1, killing off all six of the Bobcats' power play opportunities, while going 1-for-1 with the extra player themselves.
Eleni Tebano scored her first goal of her senior season, while Kennedy Ottenbreit and Christina Rombaut also ended the night with one point each. Goaltender Robyn Chemago had 33 saves, making a number of impressive and key stops to keep the game as close as it was.
Quinnipiac's best chance at a goal occurred with 25 seconds to go in the first period. Melissa Samoskevich skated through a handful of Dartmouth players and took a shot from the right. Chemago, while hugging the right pipe, made the save, but the puck bounced to the left where the net was unmanned. Luckily, Rombaut acted quickly to clear the puck and keep the game scoreless.
With just over 11 minutes to play in the second, Kenzie Lancaster picked up the puck in Quinnipiac's zone and carried it all the way down the right side, skating behind the net and shooting into the left corner to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. At 14:10, Chemago stopped a would-be goal right off the faceoff, diving for the puck and sliding to the side to make the save.
The third period was where the game got interesting. At 12:45, a quick pass from Rombaut to Ottenbreit at the blueline made its way to Tebano, who pocketed the puck into the left corner, tying the game at 1-1. A mere 40 seconds later, Quinnipiac's Kate MacKenzie scored the eventual game-winner, making it 2-1. The Bobcats tried their luck at any empty netter with less than 30 seconds to go, but it went wide.
Against Princeton
A backhand shot by Tebano with 57.7 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Big Green over No. 10/10 Princeton, 3-2. The victory gives the Big Green their first win of the 2016-17 season, while Laura Schuler also got her first win as head coach of the program. The last time Dartmouth won in overtime was on Nov. 2, 2012, when it defeated Yale by a score of 5-4.
Dartmouth got things started early, scoring twice in the first eight minutes of play. Less than four minutes in, the Big Green got their first power-play opportunity when a Tiger was put in the box and, just 18 seconds after the call, a few great passes between Ottenbreit and Emma Korbs resulted in the latter's first marker of the season.
Four minutes later, Sabrina Huett broke up a Princeton play in the Tigers' zone and got the puck to Sydney Hill, who found Rose Falzone waiting by the unmanned left pipe. A quick reaction by Falzone gave the freshman her first goal of her collegiate career.
The Tigers had an impressive start to the second period, getting one goal back two minutes in before tying the score just over a minute later. Both tallies were credited to Karlie Lund. The teams rode out the remaining 16 minutes tied at 2-2.
Both Dartmouth and Princeton returned to the ice for the third with its eye on that deciding third goal. After the Big Green got called for a penalty late in the period, Turner swept in, intercepted a Tiger cross and carried the puck down the right side, going for the shorthanded goal, but was stopped by Alysia DaSilva in net. Princeton had two penalties called almost simultaneously, giving Dartmouth a two-man advantage. The Big Green had a flurry of shots, but DaSilva got in the way of all of them, sending the game to overtime.
The home team had 37 seconds of 5-on-3 play to start the period, but Princeton was able to kill the opportunity. With just 57 seconds left on the clock, Tebano got the puck in Dartmouth territory, passed to Turner in the crease and, before DaSilva could cover her left post, shot to the left to end the game.
ECAC HOCKEY WEEKLY HONORS
Following a huge weekend in net, Chemago was named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week. Against Quinnipiac, she had 33 saves, making a number of impressive and key stops to keep the game as close as it was. She also played a big hand in helping kill all six of the Bobcats' power play opportunities. Against Princeton, she made a season-high 45 saves while earning her first win of her senior year. Overall, she played 122 minutes, allowed just four goals while making 78 saves, had a .951 save percentage and 1.96 goals against average.
SCOUTING MAINE
Although the Black Bears have struggled during the early stages of their season, they have picked up wins over some pretty tough opponents. Their first win came in the form of a 2-0 shutout over Rensselaer in the second of the teams' two-game series in September and, although Maine dropped the next five straight contests, it picked up a huge 3-2 victory over Boston College, snapping the Eagles' 52-game undefeated streak in Hockey East contests dating back to 2014. A few weeks later, the Black Bears rebounded from a 5-3 loss to Boston University to take down the Terriers, 4-1. Most recently, Maine skated to a 2-2 draw against UNH. Tereza Vanisova leads the team in goals (8), assists (9) and points (17).
LAST TIME AGAINST THE BLACK BEARS
On Nov. 10, 2015, Turner scored Dartmouth's lone goal of the game in the 4-1 loss to Maine in a midweek non-conference contest inside Thompson Arena. The Big Green outshot the Black Bears, 27-16, and neither team was able to score on the power play, as Maine went 0-for-2 and Dartmouth was 0-for-3. Christie Honor appeared between the pipes for the entire game, making 12 saves in all.
AND IN NET...
Chemago has appeared in and started four of the team's six games, making 134 saves while allowing 11 goals for a .924 save percentage and 2.74 goals against average. Honor was the starting goalie against both St. Lawrence and Clarkson, making 58 stops and allowing eight goals for a .879 save percentage and 4.04 goals against average. Dartmouth's other goaltender, Shannon Ropp, has not appeared in a regular-season game, but had a strong performance in the exhibition contest against McGill.
