BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Dartmouth women's basketball team's late game surge fell just short, as the Big Green fell to Vermont, 59-54, in Burlington, Vermont on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, Dartmouth drops to 1-1, while the Catamounts improve to 1-1.
For the second consecutive game, senior Fanni Szabo was the Big Green's leading scorer with 22 points. Sophomore Emily Dryden also reached double-digits in scoring with 10 points, while sophomore Olivia Smith had a decent day on the boards with 10 rebounds.
“The major lesson we're going to pull out of this as a program is that we have a team that is willing to fight,” Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach, Belle Koclanes said. “We dug two holes, one in the first half and one in the second, which was the largest one we had to come back from. Again, it's not the outcome we were looking for, but the lesson is we have group of young women that is going to fight to the buzzer.”
Vermont's offense had a decent day shooting 42 percent from field, as it's top scorers each tailed 11 points. The Catamounts opened up a 19-11 lead after one quarter of play at Patrick Gymnasium, but Dartmouth responded in the second, closing the lead to two after three-pointers by Szabo and Andi Norman.
At the half, Vermont led 30-24 before taking control of the contest in the third quarter. The Catamounts unleashed an 11-2 run, taking a 43-30 lead.
Trailing by 13 points to begin the final stanza, Dartmouth needed a big run to climb back into the game. Instead, Vermont went on an 8-0 run in the quarter's opening minutes. The Big Green did not give in and began to mount a comeback that fell just short in the end. A pair of three-pointers by Szabo allowed Dartmouth to chip away at Vermont's lead. With 3:49 remaining, Dryden was fouled going to the rim, but was able to complete the crucial three-point play.
Szabo added one final three to bring her team within seven, but the Big Green ran out of time before the final horn sounded. The Budapest, Hungary native finished the day 5-10 from beyond the arc.
“Fanni is our calming presence,” Koclanes said. “She's our only senior, has the most experience on this team and she's our most consistent player. Fanni is always going to get our opponents best effort, but now Fanni understands that and she's ready for it.”
The Big Green return to action on Nov. 23 when they host Holy Cross at Leede Arena at 2 p.m.
