WEST POINT, N.Y. – The first road test for the Dartmouth women's basketball team was a battle, resulting in a loss to Army West Point on Wednesday night, 71-56.
The loss moves the Big Green to 4-1 on the season while Army improves to 5-2. Senior Andi Norman led the team in scoring with 14 points followed by Cy Lippold with 12 and Emily Slagle scored 10.
“Army taught us a great lesson tonight with their pressure and physicality, two major growth opportunities for our team moving forward is taking better care of the basketball and playing with physicality,” said head coach Belle Koclanes. “I was pleased with our first half effort, we went down early and were able to fight back, keep it tight, but had a tough third quarter. Every day is a new day, so we'll learn the lessons from Army, first road trip, and build upon them going to Marist, and will try to be a better team playing against Marist.”
Norman scored the first points for the road team, sinking a three in the first 60 seconds of play, but the Black Knights came back on their home court. At the end of a physical first quarter, Army led 15-11, with six turnovers and a 30.8 shooting percentage from Dartmouth.
Coming into the second quarter down by four, the Big Green cut into the lead, eventually tying it up and taking the lead when senior Emily Slagle finished a three-point play, taking the 21-20 advantage. Army shortly took the one-point lead back, but the pace of the second quarter quickened slightly for Dartmouth following Slagle's scoring. Both teams exchanged scoring, before the Black Knights jumped ahead and went into halftime up 37-31.
Opening the last 20 minutes of play, the home team came hammering back on offense and scored off turnovers from the Big Green. Army took a 10-point lead, up 41-31, before Dartmouth went on an 8-0 run and got within two points of tying it up, but the Black Knights had an answer and scored a three immediately after and opened an 11-0 run. Army took its biggest lead of the game ending the third, up by 14 points with a 55-41 advantage.
The Black Knights continued to score in the fourth, while the Big Green had a few turnovers that the home team capitalized off to extend the lead even further, taking a 24-point advantage, their biggest lead of the game, with four minutes left to play.
Dartmouth shot 38.9 percent from the floor, 32 percent from three and 100 percent from the free throw line, compared to Army's 46.8 percent from field goal range. The Black Knights scored 44 of their 71 points in the paint.
The Big Green return to action on Saturday, taking on Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. at 7 p.m.
