HANOVER, N.H. – Despite a third quarter rally, the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Yale, 57-50 in Leede Arena on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 6-14 overall, 1-6 in conference play, while the Bulldogs improve to 11-9, 2-5 in Ivy League play.
Three Dartmouth players ended the night in double figures as Olivia Smith led the Big Green with 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior Fanni Szabo scored 12, while sophomore Isalys Quiñones also added 12 points with three assists.
Dartmouth trailed for the majority of the contest, but found its way in the third when Szabo's layup gave the Big Green their first lead since the game's opening minutes. A jumper and layup by Kate Letkewicz extended Dartmouth's advantage, but Yale countered and retook the lead, 41-39.
With just five seconds to go in the quarter, Szabo put up a three-point attempt from just beyond the arc that fell as the buzzer sounded, giving the Big Green a one-point lead heading into the final stanza.
“We had a great third quarter,” said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Women's Basketball. “We talked about getting some fresh legs in there and I think we made one substitution at that point. It's just one of those things. We're still trying to figure out who to play with this group from the guard standpoint. You've seen a real consistent rotation at the post position because our post play has been fantastic. The fourth quarter was about grit and will, credit to Yale they came out and executed and put it away.”
In the fourth, the Bulldogs responded to the Big Green's buzzer beater by unleashing an 11-0 run to begin the quarter, before Smith's basket could quiet a Yale team that shot 43 percent from the field in the final period.
Dartmouth did not go quietly into the night as Letkewicz drained a three to bring the Big Green within five points of the lead with just over two minutes to play. With 35 seconds remaining, the Bulldogs' Bronwyn Davies hit a jumper to seal the victory for her team.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow night when it hosts Brown at 4 p.m. The game can be seen live on the Ivy League Digital Network with Brett Franklin and Jill Glessner on the call.
Notes: Sophomore Cy Lippold started the game for the Big Green in her first start of the 2016-17 campaign.
