THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES
The Dartmouth women's basketball team returns home for its only pair of games in Leede Arena during the month of February, when the Big Green host Yale and Brown.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Yale heads into Friday's game having lost four of its last five games, with just one victory in Ivy League play. Recently the Bulldogs fell to Cornell at home 76-63. As a team, Yale averages 63.7 points per game and is led by senior Lena Munzer who averages 13.8 points. Junior Jen Berkowitz is also a scoring threat with 13.1 points per game.
LAST TIME AGAINST YALE
On Feb. 27, 2016, Dartmouth fell to the Bulldogs on Senior Night, 65-62 as Fanni Szabo scored her 1,000th career point. At the 8:45 mark of the first quarter a jumper by Szabo gave her the milestone basket as she became the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. A late rally by Dartmouth in the fourth quarter cut the Yale lead to just a point, but with five seconds remaining, Nyasha Sarju hit two free throws to clinch the victory for the Bulldogs. The Big Green had one final chance to tie the game with a three, but Szabo's attempt fell just short as the final horn sounded.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
Brown comes to Hanover having won four of its last six, which included a 98-88 victory over Princeton to open up conference play. Recently, the Bears pulled off the weekend sweep with a pair of wins over Cornell and Columbia in Providence. Brown's offense is led by freshman Justine Gaziano who scores an impressive 18.2 points per game. Sophomore Shayna Mehta will also be a player to watch as she averages 14.1 points through 19 games.
LAST TIME AGAINST BROWN
On Feb. 26, 2016, Dartmouth extended its win streak to five games after taking down Brown at home 60-56. Four Big Green players finished the evening in double figures in scoring. Senior Lakin Roland led the team with 17 points while Kate Letkewicz scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Amber Mixon continued her strong play scoring a season-high 13 points. The victory was also Dartmouth's first five-game win streak since Feb. 2009.
LAST TIME OUT
This past Saturday, the Big Green fell to league-leading Penn 68-38 on Saturday night at The Palestra in Philadelphia. Sophomore Emily Dryden scored seven points and grabbed a team-high six boards. Junior Emily Slagle also scored seven points for Dartmouth and got her first start of the 2016-17 campaign. In the opening minutes of the game, the Big Green hoped to hang close with a Quaker offense that had many scoring threats to contend with. Dartmouth had a golden opportunity about halfway through the quarter when last season's Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, Sydney Stipanovich went down hard with an ankle injury and was helped to the bench. The Big Green could not capitalize as Penn unleashed a 9-0 run to go up 13-5 before the end of the quarter.
THINK PINK
On Saturday, Dartmouth will host its annual breast cancer awareness game to benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Since 2009, teams across the country have held breast cancer awareness games, “Play 4 Kay” to honor longtime North Carolina State head coach Kay Yow who passed away in 2009.
GETTING IT DONE AT THE CHARITY STRIPE
The Big Green have been a solid free throw shooting team for the majority of the season. Currently Dartmouth is third in the Ancient Eight behind Columbia and Brown, shooting 70 percent from the line.
ABOVE AND BEYOND THE ARC
Letkewicz not only leads the Green shooting the three, but she also leads the Ivy League at 45.5 percent. The Waterloo, Iowa native averages a team-high 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
The Big Green's lone senior, Szabo has been climbing on some of Dartmouth's all-time records lists. With 1,203 career points, Szabo is in sole possession of 12th in the all-time scoring category. She is also sixth in both three-point field goals made and attempted. Letkewicz has also risen to ninth in three-point field goals, making 106 career shots from beyond the arc.
LIVE FROM LEEDE
For the first time in recent years, Big Green basketball returns to the airwaves as each home game will be broadcast live on KOOL FM 93.9/96.3. Brett Franklin will serve as the team's play-by-play broadcaster with Jill Glessner on color commentary.
