PRINCETON, N.J. – Two members of the Big Green scored in double-figures, but the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Princeton, 85-55 at Jadwin Gymnasium on Friday night.
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 6-12 overall, 1-4 in Ivy League play, while the Tigers improve to 8-9, 2-2 in conference play.
Junior Emily Slagle set a new career-high with 13 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Big Green, while teammate Kate Letkewicz poured in 12 and also grabbed six boards. On the other side of the floor, three Princeton players ended the game in double-figures, led by Bella Alarie who scored a team-high 14.
“Slagle played the way we expect our entire team to play,” said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Women's Basketball. “We will beat Princeton in the future, that's what we are here to do. To earn an 18th championship we need to find a way to beat Princeton and every Ivy League team in the conference. For us to do that, every one of our players needs to play the way Emily Slagle did tonight.”
Dartmouth hoped to carry the momentum it built from last weekend's thrilling pair of games and for the first quarter the Big Green were able to do so. Letkewicz's three gave Dartmouth its first lead of the night in the opening minutes of the contest, but Princeton responded with a 7-0 run, jumping out to an early 11-5 advantage. The Big Green kept it close throughout the first after sophomore Cy Lippold drained a three to even the score at 14 apiece.
In the second, the Tigers' offense came alive, outscoring Dartmouth 27-12. After Princeton's 8-1 run, Andi Norman drove hard to basket for the layup to try and break the Tiger's rhythm. By the halftime buzzer the Big Green found themselves down 44-26.
“Princeton is young with great athletes and talent,” Koclanes said. “They have all the intangibles. Our team is young as well and I was really looking forward to coming here to compete. We're always going to credit our opponents, so credit to Princeton.”
Dartmouth needed a strong second half to climb back into the contest, but Princeton came out of the locker room shooting the ball well with an 11-0 run that was sparked by three consecutive three-pointers. The Tigers finished the night with 12 made shots from beyond the arc.
In the fourth, Olivia Smith hit a jumper before a Slagle three, but Princeton responded with a 7-0 run, eliminating any chance of a late Big Green comeback.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow night when the Big Green travel to league-leading Penn at 7 p.m.
