PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dartmouth volleyball took down Brown by a score of 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 28-30, 25-19) on Saturday, rebounding from a dropped third set to return to Hanover with the win. The Big Green improved to 7-10 overall and 3-4 in Ivy League play, while the Bears fell to 8-9 and 1-6.
For the second night in a row, sophomore
Elise Petit led the team with 12 kills and 13.0 points. Three players had double-digit digs; sophomore
Mallen Bischoff, senior
Zoe Leonard and freshman
Annemarie Horn, while junior
Abby Kott had an impressive seven block assists.
"This was a great road win for us tonight to finish the first round of Ivy matches," head coach Gilad Doron said. "I was very proud of our composure weathering every run Brown had. Our blocking and defense were solid and our middles did a nice job mixing their shots. Abby had her best game since returning and it's great to see her making plays. I also thought Mallen played great defense and was very solid offensively."
Brown won the first three points of the first set, but Dartmouth responded by taking a one-point lead following kills by freshman
Emma Moffet and senior
Samantha Bozoian, and an error on the other side of the net. The Bears jumped ahead once again, until a 6-1 Big Green run (three of which were aces by Horn and Leonard) put Dartmouth up, 21-18. The Green finished strong, allowing the home team to get just two more points before shutting the set down (25-20).
Although the Bears took the first point of the second set, it was the Green that won the next five off some Brown errors and kills by Moffet and Petit. From there, Dartmouth never surrendered the lead, at times sitting as many as six points ahead of its opponent. The home team rallied to get within two points (18-16), but was not able to do much more damage before Dartmouth won set two (25-19).
The third set was a lot closer than the other two, featuring four ties before the sixth point. After that, the Big Green had a small advantage (10-7), only to have the Bears go on an 8-2 run to steal the lead (15-12). Kills by Bozoian and Kott made it a one-point set (15-14), but Brown went on another run to get close to claiming its first win of the night (21-15). Dartmouth fought back, saving three set points, tying the score five times and sending it to extra points before Brown won (30-28).
The Bears took their victory into the next set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Brown remained ahead until an 8-1 Dartmouth run put the Big Green ahead, 12-8. Dartmouth kept Brown at a comfortable distance, shutting the match down following three straight errors on the other side of the net (25-19).
Dartmouth will remain on the road next weekend, facing Harvard at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19.
