Â
Dartmouth starts its season out with a 1-0 record while the Greyhounds are still unable to find a win as they drop to 0-2 in their young season.
Â
"Loyola is really well coached," said
Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's basketball. "they play to their sets, so for us we wanted to play fast and have our defense create offense. Tonight, we did a great job executing offensively and we need to work on things defensively so we can play faster and score in the open floor."
Â
Loyola jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Dartmouth was still trying to find its groove. McKenna got the Big Green going with her first triple of the game to cut the deficit to one with 6:07 remaining in the first quarter. After Loyola went back ahead by three, McKenna drilled her second from beyond the arch to tie the game at six less than a minute later. Both teams traded buckets for the rest of the quarter and the Greyhounds took a 12-10 lead at the end of the first.
Â
Luce wasted little time burying a three to begin the second to give the Big green a 13-12 advantage. McKenna then made a jumper and a free throw and Brown hit a fastbreak shot which started a 7-0 run for Dartmouth midway through the second quarter to give the Big green a 22-14 advantage that was capped off with a layup by Quinones with 4:43 to go. Dartmouth would make a few free throws before Loyola hit a three before the half to cut the Big Green lead to 25-19 at the break.
Â
The Greyhounds made it close coming out of halftime, a jumper cut the lead to four in the opening minute.
Cy Lippold put an end to that with a long ball that sparked a 13-7 run to close the third with most of the points coming in the paint to extend the Dartmouth lead to 37-28 at the end of three.
Â
The fourth quarter was evenly matched as neither side would budge. Dartmouth outscored Loyola 11-10 and the damage was done as the Big Green secured their first victory of the season.
Â
Dartmouth will now prepare for its first road contest at Vermont on Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Burlington at Patrick Gymnasium.
