HANOVER, N.H. — The Granite Bowl is alive and well as Dartmouth and New Hampshire reached an agreement to play six football games between the only two Division I programs in the state from 2021-28.
The first of the six games is scheduled for Oct. 16, 2021 in Durham with the Wildcats returning to Hanover the following year on Oct. 15. After the Big Green open their 2023 season at Wildcat Stadium on Sept. 16, the series will be on hiatus for one year before returning to Memorial Field on Sept. 20, 2025. The final two games will be at New Hampshire in 2027 (Sept. 25) and back at Dartmouth in 2028 (Sept. 23).
The series dates back to 1901 with the Wildcats holding a slim 19-18-2 advantage over the Big Green. But both sides have enjoyed extended periods of success against the other as Dartmouth won the first 16 meetings — allowing a total of just 42 points — through the 1972 campaign before UNH broke through with its first victory the next year in Durham, 10-9.
After the Green earned a 24-13 triumph in the next showdown in 1976, the Wildcats boasted a 20-game unbeaten streak in the series with 18 wins and two ties. That success came to a halt just two years ago when New Hampshire, ranked 22nd in the FCS poll at the time, was upset by Dartmouth thanks to a 15-point fourth quarter in a thrilling 22-21 comeback victory at Memorial Field.
The Big Green concluded the 2018 campaign with a 9-1 record and 6-1 mark in the Ivy League, finishing second to Princeton, which ended the year 10-0 thanks to a hard-fought 14-9 home victory over Dartmouth in week eight of the season. New Hampshire suffered through a 4-7 season, missing out on the FCS playoffs for the first time in 15 years.
