THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES
The Dartmouth softball team opens Ivy League play this weekend at Penn in a three-game series.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS
Penn currently has a 3-12 season record and began conference action last weekend against Columbia, with a 1-2 Ivy record. The Quakers were scheduled to take on La Salle on the road on Wednesday, but the game was postponed due to snow in the area. Leading Penn on the offensive side is freshman Tabitha Dyer who holds a .359 batting average with 14 hits, including three doubles and five RBI in 39 at-bats. Dyer took home the Ivy League Rookie of the Week honor two weeks ago following a solid performance in six games at the USF Under Armor Invitational, where she pulled double duty, making four appearances as a pitcher posting a 3.07 ERA in 13.2 innings with eight strikeouts. Senior Mason Spichiger is leading the Quaker pitching staff with a 4.90 ERA through 30 innings pitched, she has allowed 37 hits and struck out 16.
LAST TIME AGAINST PENN
Early last April, the Big Green split a doubleheader at Philadelphia, taking a win in the first game and falling in extra innings in the second. In the second game Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first, before the home team scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Penn scored two more runs in the third, tying the game 4-4 heading into the fourth, where the Big Green bested their opportunity adding two more runs. The Quakers scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, with a 6-5 score, before tying it up once again in the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth inning, former Dartmouth player Lourlin Lara hit an RBI single taking a 7-6 lead, but Penn responded yet again tying it up to end the inning and took the win on a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green returned to the east coast after a long trip to Texas. Dartmouth fell to Lamar University in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, but came back to take down Houston Baptist in single-game action on Wednesday. Against HBU, Dartmouth took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second and tallied one more run in the fourth, holding the home team scoreless until the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, Micah Schroder hit a single with runners on second and third who both scored, taking a 6-0 lead. The Huskies finally responded with runs of their own, scoring two in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer from Demi Janak. Junior Morgan Martinelli hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning, securing the 7-2 win.
