HANOVER, N.H. – The 2018 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championship gets underway Thursday, June 21 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Dartmouth will have several representatives at the meet held at Drake Stadium, but few will have better storylines than Tim Wunderlich '09 and Benjamin Ose '19 competing in the decathlon.
It is believed that this is the first time ever in the history of the US national meet that a coach and a current student-athlete still under the guidance of that coach will compete against one another in the same event.
Wunderlich is a former Dartmouth decathlete who competes for Shore Athletic Club. He helped coach Ose to a 15th-place finish and Second Team All-America honors at the NCAA Championship meet two weeks ago in Eugene.
"I am extremely excited to be able to compete alongside Ben on this stage," Wunderlich said. "He has had an amazing season, and what better way to share with him than competing alongside him at the most elite track meet in the US. We are both prepared and looking forward to working together and making Dartmouth proud!"
The women's 1500m will see a pair of former Dartmouth student-athletes competing as former teammates Dana Giordano '16 and Helen Schlachtenhaufen '17 will line up against one another. The first round of the event is set to begin at 4:35 p.m. ET on Thursday with the final scheduled for Saturday at 4:46 p.m. ET.
Ose and Wunderlich will be competing in the 10 events of the decathlon over two days starting Thursday afternoon and ending with the 1500m Friday evening.
Those looking to follow along can do so by watching with the NBC Sports family of networks. Friday night can be seen on NBC Sports Network, while Saturday and Sunday will be carried live on NBC.
