HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated UAlbany, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Burnham Field in a penalty riddled match. It was the team's first victory at home since the season opener on August 24.
Â
Dartmouth (4-3-1) held a wide margin in shots, outshooting UAlbany (6-4-0) 23-9 and 11-4 on goal. However, both sides were even for the day with seven corner kicks each.
Â
Seniors Alyssa Neuberger and
Remy Borinsky each tallied a goal, while freshman
Tracey Mills came away with the game winner in the 73rd minute.
Â
"I like the way that we responded after giving up two deficits," said head coach
Ron Rainey. "This is the kind of effort that we needed as we head into conference."
Â
UAlbany came out energized to start the first three minutes of the match, coming away with three corner kicks and a shot that was blocked. The Great Danes could not capitalize on any of their chances.
Â
The first goal of the match came in the 22nd minute for UAlbany after a Dartmouth foul set up a penalty kick. Gina Bracamonte booted it past the keeper to make it 1-0 Great Danes. Dartmouth had two shots in the closing minutes of the half but trailed going into the break.
Â
A foul just outside the box set the stage for a free kick within striking distance for Neuberger in the 64th minute. The senior launched one to the back of the net to tie the match at one.
Â
Moments later in the 64th minute, Claire Stackel secured another penalty kick for the Great Danes and put UAlbany back on top, 2-1.
Â
Things would even-out just two minutes later. A foul on the Great Danes set up Borinsky for a penalty kick of her own and she sneaked the ball past the goalie to tie the match back up at two.
Â
An excellent through-ball from
Mollie McGorisk and a touch pass from
Erin Kawakami gave Mills a wide-open look and she took full advantage in the 73rd minute, giving Dartmouth the lead and eventually the win.
Â
Ivy League play starts for the Big Green on Saturday when they welcome Brown to Hanover for a 7 p.m. start at Burnham Field.
