TENERIFE, Spain – Beginning on Saturday, September 22 and running through the 30th, the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup gets underway in Tenerife, Spain. Senior
Isalys Quiñones and the Puerto Rican national team are making its first-ever appearance in the world cup.
Puerto Rico secured one of the 16 spots in FIBA's flagship women's competition by beating Brazil 75-68 in the third-place game of the 2017 AmeriCup Games in a tightly contested game.
Puerto Rico will be playing in Group C along with Japan, Belgium and Spain. Their schedule consists of Belgium on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., they then take on Spain on Sunday at 3 p.m. and their final scheduled game is against Japan on Tuesday at 6 a.m. (all times are Eastern Standard Time).
The team has had a successful ride in the past few months, not only did they advance to the FIBA World Cup, but they won their first-ever Centrobasket Women's Championship on August 24 with an 83-54 win over Cuba
"It has been an awesome experience representing Puerto Rico," said Quiñones. "The international game is more aggressive than what I am used to in the states because the women are older, the game is much faster and more physical. I am proud to be representing the country of Puerto Rico."
Last year for the Big Green, Quiñones finished the season averaging 10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and led the team with 18 blocks.
