CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After falling behind 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and 27-7 at halftime, Dartmouth used a big third quarter where they outscored the Crimson 27-12. But the Big Green ultimately fell short, 56-46, at Lavietes Pavilion Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green fall to 7-7 on the season and starts 0-1 in Ivy play, while Harvard improves to 8-6 and 1-0 in the conference.
Paula Lenart finished with eight points and 12 rebounds.
Cy Lippold led the team with 11 points, while
Annie McKenna was also in double figures with 10
"It was a really hard first quarter not being able to put the ball in the basket," said
Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "We had great looks and we were defending well but we just didn't put the ball in the basket. It took us a while to break the ice and we are trying to figure out why after some great practices."
"The rest of the game was a game, we lost the second quarter by six and we won the second half by 10. The second half was Dartmouth women's basketball, so we need to figure out how to start better." Koclanes continued.
Dartmouth's defense forced a couple early turnovers as Harvard led 2-0 during the first two minutes of the game. From there, Dartmouth struggled to produce offense and could not find the cup as the Crimson built a 14-0 advantage after one. Dartmouth finished 0-14 from the field in the first.
Neither side could generate much on offense in the early going of the second. A basket was not scored until there was 6:31 on the clock, bringing the Harvard lead to 17-0.
Katie Douglas finally shook the lid off the basket with a driving layup to give the Big Green their first points with 6:22 to go in the second. A free throw and a jumper by
Anna Luce kept the offense going to complete a 5-0 run and make it a 17-5 game with five minutes left in the half. Harvard closed the half on a 10-2 run to make it 27-7 at halftime.
All the rust from the long break was gone in the third as the Big Green outscored the Crimson 27-12 in the quarter. McKenna hit a 3-pointer just 30 seconds into the half, jump starting an 18-4 run over the next six minutes to cut the deficit to 31-25. During the run, McKenna hit two triples, while Lenart,
Elle Louie and Lippold each had four points. After Harvard halted the scoring streak with a three of its own, Louie got a tough layup to go, sparking a 9-5 run where Dartmouth cut it to a four-point game with 1:15 left in the quarter and made it a 39-34 game at the end of three quarters.
The Crimson used its home-court to its advantage in the fourth, outscoring Dartmouth 16-5 for most of the quarter. Lippold knocked down a triple and hit a jumper in the paint in the final 30 seconds, but it was not enough.
Dartmouth faces this very same Harvard team next, this time at Leede Arena on Saturday at 5 p.m.
