HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth wide receiver Drew Estrada garnered a pair of weekly honors today, being named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week by the league office as well as the Gold Helmet Award winner for Division I from the New England Football Writers Association.
Estrada is the 13th Big Green player in the past decade to earn the Gold Helmet, which is given to the top player in New England every week. He is also the third Dartmouth player to win a conference weekly award in as many weeks while earning the first of his career.
A senior from Argyle, Texas, Estrada became just the fourth Dartmouth player to amass 200 receiving yards in a game, doing so with just five catches in the 42-10 victory over Yale on Saturday. He made his presence known right away, hauling in a 75-yard touchdown toss on the game's second play from scrimmage. Estrada added grabs of 19, 25 and 23 yards in the first half, then started the third quarter with another long touchdown catch, this time a 61-yard score on the Big Green's third play of the half to give him 203 yards, 16 shy of the school record.
Estrada also ran the ball twice for 13 yards, giving him 216 all-purpose yards, his second time topping 200 this season. The 203 receiving yards left him needing just 33 more to become the 23rd Dartmouth player with 1,000 in a career. For the season, Estrada leads the Ivy League with 376 receiving yards and a 22.1-yard average per catch while ranking second with 137.3 all-purpose yards per game and fourth with 17 catches.
The last Big Green player to take home the offensive weekly award from the Ivy League was quarterback Derek Kyler just over a year ago. The other Dartmouth weekly awards this season have gone to place kicker Connor Davis for special teams two weeks ago and linebacker Jack Traynor for defense last week.
Junior Niko Mermigas, freshman Quinten Arello and senior Jared Gerbino earned their places on the league's honor roll as well. Mermigas collected eight tackles and an interception from his strong safety position; Arello picked off a pass in his first career start that set up Dartmouth's third touchdown of the first quarter; Gerbino completed 5-of-7 passes for a career-high 224 yards and two touchdowns plus ran 11 times for 59 yards and another score. Gerbino's performance also garnered him honorable mention for the College Football Performance Awards FCS National Player of the Week.
Dartmouth takes a break from league action to play its final non-conference game at Marist (1-4) this Saturday at noon in the first-ever game between the two schools on the gridiron. The game will be streamed live on the Red Fox Network, and a free audio broadcast will be available online as well through DartmouthSports.com with Brett Franklin and Wayne Young '72 calling the action.
Notes: Estrada was also named the league's offensive player of the week by College Sports Madness and received honorable mention from STATS for the National Offensive Player of the Week award … the Big Green record for receiving yards in a game belongs to Jack Daly '84, who produced 219 yards on nine receptions against Colgate early in the 1982 season … the other Dartmouth receivers to top 200 are Victor Williams (213 on 12 catches against Penn in 2015) and Damien Roomets '02 (201 on a school-record 17 receptions against UNH in 2000).
