PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dartmouth volleyball won the first set but could not hold off a strong Brown team, falling by a score of 3-1 (25-13, 14-25, 17-25, 18-25) at Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday.

Freshman Makenzie Arent had another double-double, this time with 17 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore Nicole Liddle was first with 11 kills, while classmate Francesca Meldrum was close behind with 10 kills and led with five total blocks and 13 points.

"I thought we started well," head coach Gilad Doron said, "but, after game one, we just didn't match the intensity and fight we needed to stay competitive in this match. I hope our players learn from tonight's game how to stay in the moment and not take mental breaks."

Dartmouth (5-6, 1-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and, after Brown (9-4, 1-1) got on the board, the teams traded every point until the Bears started to close the gap (10-8). A 12-2 Green rally thanks to eight Brown errors and kills by junior Elise Petit, freshman Grace Wiczek, senior Carly Tower and sophomore Annemarie Horn allowed Dartmouth to pull ahead by a score of 22-10. The Bears never recovered, and an ace by sophomore Bella Hedley ended it (25-13).

Brown took control of set two, profiting on some Dartmouth errors to lead, 7-3. The Big Green worked hard to lessen the home team's lead following some errors by the Bears and kills by Arent and Petit, but Brown managed to stay just out of arm's reach (17-14). The Bears had an 8-0 run at the end to make it a 1-1 match (25-14).

There were a handful of errors committed by both teams and the beginning of the third. Dartmouth stayed right behind Brown until four straight Bears points put them up, 10-6. Still trailing by four (13-9), the Green started to work their way back and soon was only down by two following kills by Meldrum and Petit (17-15). Brown took off, ending the set after a 7-2 run (25-17).

Dartmouth and Brown tied the score four times in the fourth set before a five-point rally gave the Bears an edge (10-5). An ace by Hedley and another Arent kill got the Green within three points, but a 7-2 rally put some distance between the teams (17-9). Dartmouth came on stronger at the end of the set thanks to kills by Liddle, Meldrum and Wiczek and some Brown errors, but one final kill by the Bears ended the match (25-18).

The Big Green will face Yale at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
