NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Dartmouth volleyball team ended the weekend with a 3-1 loss to Yale (15-25, 25-23, 15-25, 19-25) at the John J. Amphitheater on Saturday.

Even though the Big Green did not come away with the win, they did end the Bulldogs' 19-set unbeaten streak, which spanned six matches and went back to Sept. 13.

Senior Carly Tower led the way with 11 kills and 12 points, while freshman Makenzie Arent was first with 17 assists and sophomore Nicole Liddle had a team-leading 12 digs.

"I thought we battled tonight and played much more inspired and together throughout the ups and downs of the game," head coach Gilad Doron said. "Carly showed great leadership. I thought in game four, we had the momentum to push it to five, but you've got to give Yale credit for how they were able to weather our run."

There were three ties in the early stages of the first set, but a 5-2 Yale run gave the home team (7-5, 3-0) a 10-7 advantage. Some Bulldog errors and kills by Liddle and Arent allowed Dartmouth (5-7, 1-2) to stay close, but a few Green errors put some distance between the teams (16-9). Dartmouth ended Yale's rally with a 3-0 run of its own, starting with a beautiful kill by Tower, to get back within four (16-12). The Bulldogs took off again, winning nine of the next 12 points to take set one (25-15).

Dartmouth fought to keep up with Yale at the start of the second but was unable to tie it before the Bulldogs pulled away again. After trailing, 11-8, kills by sophomore Francesca Meldrum and junior Tola Akinwumi and a Yale error made for a tied game (11-11). There were six ties before the Green got ahead by two (19-17), but that did not last long, as there were four more ties after that to make it a 23-23 set. Kills by Liddle and fellow sophomore Jael Campbell gave the win to Dartmouth (25-23).

The Bulldogs had a good start to the third set, jumping out to a 12-4 lead. The Big Green had a 7-3 run following kills by Liddle, Tower and Meldrum, and a trio of Yale errors to get within four points (15-11). The Bulldogs took control from there, winning eight of the next 10 points to make it a 23-13 set. Dartmouth got two points closer following a Liddle kill and a block by Akinwumi before Yale ended it (25-15).

Trailing by one at the start of the fourth, the Big Green moved ahead following two kills by Tower and an ace by Meldrum (6-4). After the Bulldogs tied it up, six straight Dartmouth points gave the visitors a comfortable lead (12-6). The Big Green held on to that advantage until a 9-1 Yale run put the Bulldogs ahead, 19-16. The home team continued on its hot streak to win the set, 25-19.

Dartmouth will close its eight-match road trip next weekend when it takes on Cornell and Columbia.
