HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball sent its four seniors out in style by defeating Cornell in four sets (25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20) on Senior Day.
Â
In the final match of her career, Carly Tower had two kills, one dig and two total blocks. Sophomore Nicole Liddle had a season-high 20 kills to go with 13 digs and a team-leading 21 points, while freshman Makenzie Arent had 35 assists.
Â
"This was a good weekend for us," head coach Gilad Doron said. "We started a little slow, but we continued on the same path we ended on yesterday. We had great team chemistry, the players stepped up when we needed them, and we played a very balanced game. We played inspired, which was good to see. After the year we've had, we still found a way to trust each other and play together, which is really fun to watch. It's exciting to know that most everyone is coming back and we can build on this for next year."
Â
A handful of blocks early in the opening set allowed the Big Red to pull ahead, 7-4. After trailing by a point or two for most of the set, Dartmouth stole the lead after a 6-1 run following two Cornell errors, a trio of Liddle kills and two aces by junior Lauren Douglas (15-13). Three ties, one lead change and five straight Green points put the home team up, 21-17. Kills by freshman Taite Ryan, junior Elise Petit and Liddle, and one final Big Red error gave set one to Dartmouth (25-18).
Â
Cornell had a good start to set two and soon had a 10-4 advantage. A 9-3 Green rally allowed Dartmouth to tie things up at 13-all before a host of errors put the visitors close to victory (20-16). Two kills by Liddle and two Cornell errors made it a two-point set (22-20). The Big Red kept the Big Green there, ending the set with three straight kills (25-20).
Â
There were a lot of ties in the early parts of the third set (nine to be exact) until Dartmouth started to pull away. A little later on, trailing, 11-10, seven straight points highlighted by two aces and a kill by Petit gave the Big Green a 17-11 advantage. When at set point, Cornell got three kills closer before another Petit kill gave the home team a 2-1 lead (25-21).
Â
The fourth set was another close affair until a kill by Liddle, an ace by sophomore Bella Hedley and a Cornell error put Dartmouth up, 11-8. The teams were pretty evenly matched for a while, with six of the next 10 points going to the Big Red to make it a tied set (14-14). A 5-0 Green rally off two kills, two blocks and an ace gave Dartmouth back its lead (19-14). The home team kept up the momentum, ending the match on an error (25-20).
