Annie McKenna matched her career high with 21 points
BALTIMORE, Md. – Loyola used a 22-0 run in the second half to deliver Dartmouth a 72-56 blow Tuesday afternoon at Reitz Arena in Baltimore. The Big Green finish non-conference play with a 6-7 record, while the Greyhounds improve to 3-8.
Â
Annie McKenna matched her career high with 21 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Anna Luce was also in double figures with 10 off the bench. Asha Taylor finished with nine points and three rebounds.
Â
Four players scored in double figures for Loyola. The Greyhounds were led by the NCAA's leader in steals, Stephanie Karcz, who tallied a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals while adding seven assists. She becomes the 11th Division I player to record a triple-double this season.
Â
"It was a competitive first half and it looked like it was going to be that way to the wire," said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "Then we got into foul trouble, which makes us a young team, and Loyola took advantage of that today. The Ivy League is a high level and we need to figure out how to be better quickly. Loyola wanted it today and they earned the win."
Â
It was a slow start as Loyola jumped ahead to a 5-2 lead after the first four minutes of action. McKenna knocked down her first triple at the 3:51 mark to even the score at five, but the Greyhounds outscored the Big Green 9-4 for the remainder of the quarter to go ahead 14-9.
Â
McKenna scored the first five points of the second and added an assist as the Big Green started the quarter on a 7-4 spurt to close the gap to 18-16. Loyola responded with back-to-back 3-pointers and went back up by eight. The Big Green then gained momentum and closed the margin by hitting six free throws to close the half on a 10-4 run, cutting the deficit to 30-28 at the break.
Â
The third quarter went in different directions in the beginning and end. Dartmouth won the first four minutes, 10-4, to build its lead to 40-32 with 6:44 on the clock. After a layup from Anna Luce put the Big Green on top by six with a layup, Loyola took over. The Greyhounds used their defensive pressure to finish the quarter on a 12-0 run and took a 53-47 advantage into the fourth.
Â
Loyola did not miss a beat as it scored the next 10 points for a total of 22 consecutive to extend its lead to 63-47. The Greyhounds outscored the Big Green 31-9 over the final 12:45 to close the game.
Â
Dartmouth will move on to Ivy League play against Harvard which begins on Jan. 11 at Leede Arena at 1 p.m. on NESN.
