Big Green Defeat Defending National Champion Clarkson, 3-2, in Overtime

HANOVER, N.H. – A goal scored by freshman Chloe Puddifant with 9.4 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Dartmouth women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over defending national champion Clarkson at Thompson Arena on Friday evening.
Trailing by two after the first period, the Big Green went on to score three unanswered goals to knock off the No. 4 team in the country.
This is the first time since Feb. 27, 2011 (another OT thriller) that Dartmouth (5-20-1, 4-15-0) has defeated Clarkson (23-7-1, 14-5-0).
Nine Big Green players ended up on the scoresheet. Junior Christina Rombaut, senior Tess Bracken and Puddifant were credited with the goals. In net, senior Christine Honor had a huge game, making 37 saves to pick up the win.
The Golden Knights had a strong first period, scoring at 3:48 and 6:50 of the first to take a 2-0 edge into the second. After returning for the second, the Big Green took complete control and scored twice in a five-minute span to tie things up. At 14:19, a scuffle in front of the net resulted in Rombaut's fourth goal of the season with just one second remaining on the power play, with assists going to senior Alyssa Baker and freshman Odnoga. At 19:26, following passes by freshman Gabby Billing and senior Kate Landers, Bracken's shot landed on goalie Kassidy Sauve's back and fell into the net before she could grab it.
Clarkson tested Dartmouth and Honor for the entirety of the third period, leading with a 15-6 shot advantage. The senior netminder was solid, making 15 saves to bring her three-period total to 31. For the first time since Nov. 10, the Green headed to overtime.
Both teams played aggressively in the extra period, taking a combined 11 shots. With time winding down, sophomore Jennifer Costa took a chance that was stopped by Sauve, but the rebound was sent directly to Puddifant. The rookie one-timed it over the goalie's left shoulder before she could react. Sophomore Katerina Dajia picked up the second assist.
Clarkson had a 39-28 shot advantage. Dartmouth went 1-for-3 with the extra player, while the Golden Knights went 0-for-5.
Dartmouth will play at Thompson one last time in 2018-19 on Saturday when it hosts St. Lawrence at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
