HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Senior
Reed Russ played a very consistent round with 15 pars and a birdie to finish the day with a 1-over 73 as the Dartmouth men's golf team completed its first spring tournament in 17th place with a 937 (+73). The Big Green saved their best round for last by shooting 9-over par (297), though Charleston Southern was the team of the day, rallying from 11 strokes back in eighth place at the start of the round to card a 10-under 278 and win the tournament by four strokes over Furman.
Reed began the day on the par-4, 360-yard seventh hole and ripped off five straight pars before bogeying the longest par-4 hole (441 yards) on the par-72, 6,913-yard course at Wexford Plantation. After another stretch of five straight pars, Russ sanke his lone birdie of the day on 18, then made par on five of the last six holes, suffering a bogey on the second-longest par-4 (420).
While Reed ended the tournament tied for 58th in the 95-player field with a 16-over 232, sophomore captain
Jason Liu was putting together his best round of the tournament as well to card a 79-76-74—229 (+13) to tie for 45th as Dartmouth's low scorer. Today, he sank three birdies and bogeyed five holes to post his 2-over 74.
Senior
John Lazor matched Liu with three birdies, two of which came on his first four holes to start his round at 2-under par. A pair of double bogeys and a bogey set him back, but he collected himself to meake par on nine of the final 10 holes with a birdie on 16 mixed in to also produce a 2-over 74 on the day. That score left him in a tie for 65th with a 234 (+18).
The day began in promising fashion for sophomore
Sam Ohno with a birdie, but it would be his only one of the day as he finished up with an 86-78-78—242 (+26). Freshman
Charles Petrie had two birdies of his own and ended the final round at +10 (82).
Brad Bawden of Memphis took home medalist honors by a single stroke by shooting 70-72-70—212 (-4), edging High Point's Brandon Einstein who made a furious run down the stretch with four birdies in his final seven holes. The leader entering the final round, Temple's Trey Wren, suffered a similar fate to his team, falling back into a tie for fifth with a 76 (+4) today. The Owls were also in the lead when the third round began, but also ended in a tie for fifth with Davidson, 10 strokes back.
Dartmouth will travel back to the state of South Carolina in three and a half weeks for the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville on March 22-24.
