HANOVER, N.H. – On the final day of the regular season, it was Cornell who came into Leede Arena and punched its ticket to the 2019 Ivy League Tournament with a 57-47 victory over Dartmouth. The Big Green finish their season with a 13-14 record and 6-8 in Ivy League play. The Big Red will be the four-seed in the tournament after completing the regular season with a 12-13 record and 6-8 in the conference.
Â
Prior to the game, the Big Green honored their five seniors
Cy Lippold,
Isalys Quinones,
Emily Dryden, Tia Yazzie and Holly Patterson.
Â
"The class of 2019 has left this program better than they found it," said
Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "We are going to miss Cy so much, she was a coach on and off the floor, she is wise beyond her years and an incredible point guard who did it on and off the court. Ice really learned how to lead this year, she was able to have some incredible games, but also lead this team off the court in practice and preparation.
Emily Dryden is so vital to this program, she knows the system better than anyone and teaches everyone how to be a better teammate and she understood and embraced her role."
Â
Cornell raced out to a 7-0 lead after the first three minutes of play.
Elle Louie got the Big Green on the board with a layup at the 6:31 mark but the Big Red extended its advantage to 12-2 with 4:02 on the clock. Dartmouth finally got its feet underneath them when
Katie Douglas hit back-to-back 3-pointers and
Anna Luce sunk another three for a 9-0 Dartmouth run to make it a 12-11, Cornell lead after one.
Â
Dartmouth led by as many as nine in the second after a couple three's by
Kealy Brown and
Anna Luce. Cornell finished the first half on a 10-5 run to cut the Big Green deficit to four at the break.
Â
The Big Red retook a 29-18 lead with 5:44 to go in the third. Dartmouth went back on top after Quinones scored seven straight Big Green points and Lippold finished the quarter with a jumper in the lane to make it a 37-34 Dartmouth lead at the end of three.
Â
The game got away from Dartmouth in the fourth as the Big Red outscored the Big Green 23-10 in the quarter.
Â
"it wasn't that we weren't working hard," Koclanes continued. "Cornell brought a championship mentality tonight. This was going to be a fight and Cornell fought to the finish and I think you saw that in their victory."
Â
The 2018-19 season saw the Big Green defeat Cornell on the road for the first time since 2009 and sweep their New York road trip for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Lippold moved into the top 10 all-time in assists at Dartmouth and ranks 11
th in 3-pointers made.
Â
"We have made so much progress in the last six years," Koclanes said. "The excitement from our alumni, fan base and school has been great and it is important to stay connected. Each year our seniors come up with a team motto and this year's was "Level Up" and we did that this year and we are moving in the right direction."
