Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2021 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by Cape Air.
This installment focuses on middle-distance runner
Caroline Walter of the women's track & field team. A native of Bemus, New York, she was the winner of the 400m at the New England Championship this past spring.
Â
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Caroline Walter: I'm taking three classes this term that are all super interesting, my favorite being Data Visualization with Yusaku Horiuchi. I've also been participating in activities with my sorority and spending time with friends outdoors in my free time. The weather has been so nice, and I've been trying to enjoy it whenever I can! Â
Â
DS: Â What is your favorite place on campus?
CW: My favorite place on campus is probably Leverone/the track. I love going to practice and being able to see all of my teammates in one place. It is actually the view out of my bedroom window this summer! I can see inside the fieldhouse at night and it's really nice.
Â
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
CW: My official visit here definitely sold me. I had the most fun here out of all of my visits and felt very comfortable with the team. Shoutout to
Nicole Deblasio '19 for being the best host!
Â
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
CW: My two sisters have both had huge influences on my life. They are both such smart, funny and talented people and I admire them so much. My older sister, Christina, ran track at Princeton and I have her to thank for getting me involved in this amazing sport. My younger sister, Cate, is a ballerina, and as a former dancer I am living vicariously through her as she dances at the School of American Ballet this summer.
Â
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
CW: I broke my indoor PR, while running to Sean Paul's "Temperature" during my previous winter season at the Armory in New York, which was pretty awesome. I don't think it would have happened if I hadn't heard the song while coming around the last curve. Now I listen to it before every race!
Â
DS: What show do you binge watch?
CW: Usually I'll binge watch a show for a little while and then get tired of it and stop, but 'The Office' is one show that never gets old. I've seen most of the episodes multiple times, but I am saving the last episode because I don't want the show to end!
Â
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
CW: I can bend my thumbs back really far, but whenever I show anyone they look at me in disgust.
Â
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
CW: My friend Camille has shortened my name to "Carol" and it has caught on with a few people. I can always hear her screaming it during my races with about 125 meters left. She is a very loud person, so it's really effective!
Â
DS: Â What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
CW: I would tell my 15-year-old self to not worry so much about trying to please others and to just work hard at what makes you happy.
Â
DS: Â If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
CW: I guess right this second, I would go to New York City, because both of my sisters are there for the summer and I am really missing them.
