HANOVER, N.H. — The
College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) revealed its
watch list for the 2019 FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy, and Dartmouth junior quarterback
Derek Kyler was among the 40 included. He is one of just two Ivy Leaguers to be named to the list along with Harvard running back Aaron Shampklin.
Last year, Kyler made a name for himself with his accurate passing, ranking second in the FCS in competition percentage (68.9, a Dartmouth record) and seventh in passing efficiency (155.54). The 6-foot, 180-pound native of DeKalb, Illinois, completed 122-of-177 throws for 1,362 yards and 13 touchdowns while getting picked off just twice. He also averaged 5.1 yards on 37 rushes with a touchdown to his credit.
Kyler split time behind center last year with
Jared Gerbino, used primarily as a wildcat QB, and the duo are expected to once again form a potent tandem for the Big Green. Last year, the pair led Dartmouth to a 9-1 overall record and 6-1 mark in the Ivy League, ending the season 15th in the coaches' poll and 18th in the STATS poll.
The CFPA touts itself as providing the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective, scientific rankings to the extent of which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
The Big Green open the 2019 season at Jacksonville. It will be the first game between the two schools on the gridiron with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
