Dartmouth begins its quest for a 19th Ivy League title
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth football team opens its preseason camp on Sunday at 2 p.m. in preparation for the 2019 season. Picked to finish second in the Ivy League preseason poll, exactly where the team finished last year while being ranked 15th in the FCS, the Big Green have their sights set on beating the prognostication and earning a 19th conference crown.
The defense, which was second in the country in fewest points allowed, will once again be a strength with co-captains Isiah Swann (6-0, 195, Sr.) and Jack Traynor (6-0, 235, 5-Sr.) leading the way. Swann, a cornerback, led all of Division I last year with a school-record nine interceptions to earn consensus All-America honors, while Traynor is a two-time unanimous All-Ivy first-team linebacker. Up front, Dartmouth has three more all-conference players, most notably Jackson Perry (6-2, 300, 5-Sr.).
Â
The offense will be in good hands once again with the quarterback tandem of Jared Gerbino (6-4, 230, Sr.) and Derek Kyler (6-0, 180, Jr.). Gerbino has been used primarily as a wildcat quarterback and led the Big Green with 700 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns, earning second-team All-Ivy distinction last year. Kyler, meanwhile, merely posted the second-highest completion rate in the FCS while throwing for 13 touchdowns with just two interceptions.
Â
Dartmouth has depth at the other offensive skill positions with Caylin Parker (5-11, 210, Sr.) and Zack Bair (5-10, 190, So.) likely to share time at tailback. Hunter Hagdorn (6-0, 200, Sr.) and Drew Estrada (6-0, 190, Sr.) will lead the receiving corps with Hagdorn already ranking among the Big Green's top 10 receivers in both catches and yardage.
Â
The biggest unknown is the offensive line with just one starter returning in Zach Sammartino (6-3, 305, 5-Sr.). How the reserves from a year ago take to starting roles this year will be a key to the success of the offense.
Â
The Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach, Buddy Teevens, is just four wins shy of 100 during his tenure with the Big Green as he he starts his 20th year in Hanover. He will lead his squad down to Jacksonville for the season opener on Sept. 21 before a tough test at home against Colgate the following week in a clash of last year's top two FCS defenses. Homecoming will take place on Oct. 12 as the Big Green host the Ivy League favorite, Yale. But the biggest date on the calendar is Nov. 9 when Dartmouth hosts Princeton at Yankee Stadium in a rematch of last year's epic clash. The game will not only be a part of the 150th anniversary of college football, but also the 250th anniversary celebration of Dartmouth College.
All practices are tentatively slated to take place on Blackman Field except for the Green-White scrimmage, which will be held at Memorial Field.
