Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2021 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by Cape Air.
This installment focuses on
Abby Shipley of the Dartmouth softball team. The Louisville, Kentucky, native is a right-handed catcher, who made seven starts behind the plate in 2019.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Abby Shipley: So far during sophomore summer, I have been attending class and workouts with my teammates. We also have been going to our field to relax and play the game we all love!
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
AS: My favorite place on campus would have to be The Green. It is such a nice place to hang out alone or with friends. I often go out there to get some sun, chat with people, and listen to music! It is also always fun to watch the many little games going on around me!
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
AS: The current coach at the time sold me on the family aspect that the softball team consumed. And she could not have been more correct! This team and this community are so loving and constantly want you to succeed. It is such a rewarding environment.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
AS: If I could swap places with a teammate it would be
Micah Schroder. Micah works so hard and has accomplished so much in her three years here at Dartmouth. She is an inspiration to me because she lives such a full and bright life all while kicking diabetes in the butt. Not to mention her style is fantastic!
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
AS: If I could play another sport it would definitely be volleyball! I played volleyball in high school and often miss it! It is such a fun and thrilling sport and I love to watch the DVB girls play.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
AS: I would say I am most passionate about the relationships in my life! I have so many great friends and they mean the world to me! They constantly have my back and I enjoy showing them that I have theirs.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
AS: The greatest influence in my life, other than my parents of course, has been my hitting coach from home, Josh Bloomer. This man is so outstanding and pushes me to be better every day. He is so kind and has always seen the good in me and the other girls he has helped! Josh Bloomer is a man of many talents and he makes me a better person every time I interact with him! Couldn't be where I am without him!
DS: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
AS: I would definitely pick Liza Koshy to play me in a movie! She is a YouTuber and I love her channel.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
AS: It was this past year when
Morgan Martinelli hit a walk-off homerun in one of her last games with us!
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
AS: Hanover is way different from where I grew up in the weather aspect, but as far as the welcoming and caring people, it is very similar!
DS: What are your plans for your upcoming off-term?
AS: For my off-term, I plan on going back home and interning for my dad's business! I will spend as much time with my family as possible because family is very important to me.
DS: You step outside tomorrow morning and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million (after taxes). What would you do with the money?
AS: With $10 million, I would want to start a non-profit that helps college students pay off student loans. Oh, and I'd also buy a nice boat for my dad and get my mom something nice too!
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
AS: The best advice I could give my 15-year-old self would be to get out there and do things you wouldn't normally do! Have fun and make memories! Forget what other people say, because in the end it doesn't really matter! As long as you're having a good time, staying focused, and loving yourself, that's all the matters.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
AS: If I could go anywhere in the world, I would want to go to Denmark. When I was in high school, I had an exchange student live with me for about a week and she was amazing! I would love to be able to go visit her and meet her family and friends. Not to mention it's beautiful there!
