HANOVER, N.H. – For a league-leading third time this season, Dartmouth sophomore
Drew O'Connor has been named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week.
Â
The league office announced the honor this afternoon after O'Connor led all ECAC Hockey Players with four goals this weekend, including his first career hat trick against Union on Friday night.
Â
That three-goal effort, coupled with a shorthanded tally in the regular season finale the following evening against RPI, gave O'Connor 21 goals, good for the top figure in ECAC Hockey through the end of the regular season, three more than the next closest player in the league.
Â
O'Connor also finished the year with 16 goals in ECAC Hockey games, the most by any league player. In doing so, the sophomore became the first Dartmouth player to lead the league in conference goals in 40 years, joining Ross Brownridge in 1979-80 as the only other Big Green player to accomplish the feat.
Â
O'Connor's first career hat trick was also his league-leading fifth multi-goal game of the season and helped Dartmouth to its first win against Union in 10 games, dating back to Jan. 31, 2015. That hat trick also gave him 20 goals on the season, becoming the first Dartmouth player since Scott Fleming (22) in 2009-10 to reach the figure.
Â
The 21 regular-season goals are also the most by a Dartmouth player since John Sturgis had the same total in the 1996-97 season.
Â
A dominating scoring presence, O'Connor was recognized as the league's top player three times this season, while no other player from across the 12-team league earned the distinction more than once. Additionally, he was named the NCAA First Star of the Week back in November.
Â
O'Connor and the rest of the Big Green earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming ECAC Hockey postseason and will host No. 11 Princeton this weekend in a best-of-three first-round series at Thompson Arena. Games 1 and 2 are set for Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m., while an if-necessary Game 3 would be Sunday at 5 p.m.
