April 15, 2018: Women's Rugby wins Ivy 7s Championship
Dartmouth women's rugby won all five of their matches, including the final against two-time defending champion Harvard, to claim the Ivy 7s Championship title.
Senior Frankie Sands '18 was named co-MVP along with Princeton's Jessica Lu after ending the weekend with six tries for 30 points, while rookie Lilly Durbin '21 led the Big Green with 41 points on seven tries and three conversions.
Following pool victories over Yale, Penn and Princeton, the Big Green posted a 40-0 semifinal win over Brown. Durbin (three tries) and sophomore Casey Smerczynski '20 (two) combined for 25 of those points, while Sands, junior Kat Ramage '19 and freshman Jourdin Thomas '21 had one each.
In the final against a team that always keeps things close, Dartmouth once again did not allow a single try and ended up with a 29-0 victory over the Crimson thanks to a pair of tries by senior Rachel Hand '18 and Durbin, and one by freshman Idia Ihensekhien '21.
April 15, 2018: Men's Tennis hands Columbia its first Ivy home loss since 2011
After falling behind, 3-0, the No. 32 Dartmouth men's tennis team won four straight singles matches to upset No. 15 Columbia, 4-3, at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
The Lions were the last of the Ivy opponents to still have a perfect record and, after the loss, were tied with the Big Green and the Quakers for first place in the conference. Fast forward through one more weekend of the regular season, and this victory was what punched Dartmouth's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
This was the first time the Green had defeated the Lions since 2013 and the latter's first Ivy loss at home in seven years.
Columbia won the doubles point and were victorious at the No. 6 and 5 singles position to make it a 3-0 match, just one point away from the win. But sophomore David Horneffer '20 defeated his ranked opponent at the No. 2 position to get Dartmouth on the board. After three-set wins by sophomore Charlie Broom '20 and senior Max Fliegner '18 at the No. 1 and 4 spots, respectively, the score was tied at three apiece.
Rookie Dan Martin '21, who had dropped a hard-fought first set, continued play at the No. 3 position. He managed to come back and win the last two sets, 6-4 and 6-0, lifting the Big Green to the victory.
April 15, 2012: Peter Williamson '12 wins Princeton Invitational
One of the most accomplished golfers in Big Green history, Peter Williamson was gearing up for another run at the Ivy League Championships in two weeks. But first, he had business to take care of at the Princeton Invitational.
After the first two rounds, the Hanover native found himself tied for fourth at 1-under par with three others, three strokes off the pace. But the senior went to work in the third and final round, carding a 4-under 67 to easily overtake the leader, who shot a 78 (+7) over his last 18 holes. Williamson finished each round no worse than even par and wrapped up the tournament with a 71-70-67—208 (-5) for his second victory of the 2011-12 season.
As a team, Dartmouth finished tied for sixth overall at 22-over par.
Williamson was especially efficient on the par-5 holes over the two days, shooting a combined 5-under on those alone at the 6,390-yard, par-71 Springdale Golf Club. This is not the last time we will be hearing about his exploits on the links …
