April 16, 2016 — John Lazor '19 wins the Yale Invitational as a freshman
One of just two players on the roster to compete in all nine tournaments during the 2015-16 season, freshman John Lazor '19 had already established himself as a major contributor to the team having posted two top-five finishes in his first seven appearances. In the final tune-up before the Ivy League Championship, the rookie bested the field at the Yale Invitational by three strokes to take medalist honors and nearly carried Dartmouth to a team victory.
The tournament lasted just one day covering 36 holes, and after the first tour of The Course at Yale, a challenging 6,810-yard, par-70 layout, Lazor found himself a mere stroke behind the co-leaders from Villanova and Fairfield at 3-over par. In the afternoon, the freshman was one of just two golfers to shoot even par, vaulting well ahead of the first-round leaders into the top spot with three strokes to spare.
As a team, the Big Green sat in second place after the first round, three strokes behind Bucknell. Dartmouth couldn't quite make up that gap, pulling within a stroke of the Bison but ultimately settling for second place at 36-over par, one shot back. Technically, the Yale B team posted the best round of the day and surged ahead of Bucknell by a stroke, but the official Bulldog team closed out a stroke behind the Big Green.
Senior Charles Cai '16, who went on to earn a spot on the All-Ivy League Second Team at the conference championship, joined Lazor in the top 10 with a 9-over 149, good for a tie for ninth. Dartmouth narrowly missed out on an Ivy League title as well, wrapping up the tournament the following week in second place, just four strokes behind Harvard. Lazor, meanwhile, went on to be named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, one of three for the Big Green since the award's inception in 2009 (Peter Williamson '12, Jason Liu '21).
