April 17, 2004: Danica Giugliano '04 twirls the fourth no-hitter in program history against Columbia
On this date 16 years ago, Danica Giugliano '04 became the fourth pitcher in Dartmouth softball history to twirl a no-hitter. She accomplished the feat in her senior season with a 1-0 victory at Columbia, one of three no-hit games against the Lions among the six thrown by Big Green pitchers.
From Gansevoort, New York, Giugliano struck out five batters with no walks over seven innings, and only two errors separated her from a perfect game. She was particularly dominant against the three-through-five hitters in the lineup, with three of her strikeouts coming against the heart of the order.
It was a pitcher's duel between the senior righthander and Columbia's Jackie Adelfio. Giugliano did face a little trouble in the first two innings due to lead-off errors. In both frames, the Lion base runner advanced to third, but Giugliano got the final two outs of the first on strikes and retired the side in the second on a grounder to third.
The game was locked in a scoreless tie until the top of the seventh when the Big Green pushed across the winning run. After junior Jodee Thompson '05 drew a walk, sophomore Lacey Neahr '06 entered to pinch run. A sacrifice bunt and a base hit advanced Neahr to third and she scored the winning run on an error.
Giugliano ranks toward the top in every major statistical category for a pitcher. She is the all-time leader in career ERA (1.85), third in wins (39) and shutouts (9), seventh in strikeouts (262) and sixth in complete games (40).
