Dartmouthsports.com will be recognizing the senior student-athletes who had their spring seasons canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Calista Almer of the softball team.
Dartmouthsports.com: What have you been up to since returning home
?
Calista Almer: I am spending time with my brother and parents, taking my senior spring courses, training, and staying in touch with friends, teammates, and coaches.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
CA: My favorite place on campus is absolutely Dartmouth Softball Park. I miss the warmth of the turf, the smell of the trees, and the occasional hiker who wanders past the field from the Appalachian Trailhead in center field!
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
CA: If I could, I would swap with my teammate and best friend,
Sophie Ausmus. She has been grinding on her fitness, eating well, and enjoying the sunny San Diego coast with her family!
DS: What has been your best on-field memory in your Dartmouth career?
CA: I have two favorite Dartmouth career memories on the field. The first was when we set an NCAA record by hitting back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs in our mercy-rule game against Cornell my sophomore year. The second memory was our walk-off against NC A&T this season. After a no-hitter thrown by
Brooke Plonka and
Madie Augusto, in the bottom of the eighth inning,
Loghan Thomas hit a deep liner to left-center and scored
Billie McFadyen from first base in a really close play at the plate. When I think back to those two memories, it reminds me of how proud I am of my teammates and how far the program has come.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
CA: I am currently researching graduate programs to continue my education in Anthropology. One day, I hope to lead archaeological field projects around the world.
DS: What is your hidden talent or something that someone might not know about you?
CA: In the Summer of 2019, I had the opportunity to work on a Smithsonian Arctic Studies field project where we got to travel up and down the Lower North Shore of Quebec. I lived on a small research vessel with the rest of the crew and performed archaeological excavations along the shorelines for two months. The purpose of the project was to answer questions about the first interactions between early Native Americans and the first Europeans who arrived in North America. I don't know if I'll ever have an experience quite like that again!
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
CA: With a name like mine, I get a lot of nicknames. I normally go by Cali or Cal, but the funniest (and grossest) nickname I was given at Dartmouth was "Callus" by my freshman year assistant coach,
Molly Fichtner. I think she just came up with it out of nowhere one day at practice and it stuck for the rest of the season.
DS: What are you going to miss most about Dartmouth?
CA: I am really going to miss living with my teammates and being within walking distance of all of my friends.
