HANOVER, N.H. – The volleyball team completed its 2-0 weekend with a 3-1 victory over Cornell (25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 25-20) at Leede Arena on Saturday.
Â
Ellie Blain had a double-double (19K, 10D) and 22.5 points, leading in kills and points, while
Taite Ryan and
Emma Engstrom were first with 18 digs apiece.
Karen Murphy had 28 assists, while three players had two aces each.
Â
"That was a tough battle," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "We had great contributions from everyone and a very balanced offense. Taite played a very solid weekend all around, Emma [Engstrom] played phenomenally, Emma [Moffet] and Ellie were great, and it was so good to see Mia back. Everyone had moments where they stepped up. It's great to finish with two wins and I hope that we can go into the second round and get more wins."

Big Green (10-6, 2-5) vs. Big Red (5-10, 1-6)
Dartmouth jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set following kills by
Amelia Gibbs and
Piper Stevens, an ace by Ryan and two Red errors. Even after Cornell got on the board, the Big Green got as far as seven points ahead until a 5-1 Big Red run made it more of a game (13-11). Dartmouth turned it up after the timeout, winning eight of the next 11 points, highlighted by kills from Stevens, Blain and Ryan (21-14). The Green got to set point, wrapping it up on a kill by Gibbs (25-19).
Â
A 5-0 Dartmouth streak off kills by Blain,
Bomi Ogunlari and
Emma Moffet and an ace by
Makenzie Arent gave the home team a 9-3 advantage in the second set. A handful of Cornell errors, an ace by
Bella Hedley and kills by Moffet and Ogunlari put 11 points between the teams (16-6). The Big Green remained comfortably ahead, making it 2-0 with a kill by Ryan (25-14).
Â
The third set was very close. After tying the score eight times early on, the Big Red had an 8-1 rally to put some real distance between them (12-17). An 8-4 Dartmouth run made up of kill and ace by Blain and a number of Cornell errors got the Big Green back in contention, while another Blain kill tied things up (21-21). There was another tie at 22-all before two straight Big Red points got the visitors to set point (24-22). Blain was on fire in the final minutes, but Cornell got the win (23-25).
Â
If you thought the third set was close, welcome to the fourth. The teams tied at every point except for the first, evening the score 12 times before three straight points from kills by Moffet and an error put Dartmouth up by two (15-13). The Green kept it going and some huge kills by Ogunlari gave the Green a 20-16 advantage. With a 24-18 lead, Cornell got two points closer before Blain ended it (25-20).
Â
Having played every one of their seven Ivy League opponents, the Big Green will now start over at the beginning, playing Harvard on the road on Saturday, Oct. 23.
