HANOVER, N.H. — Stats Perform announced the finalists for its FCS postseason awards today, and Dartmouth had two members of its football team included — linebacker
Jalen Mackie for the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation's top defender, and
Buddy Teevens for the Eddie Robinson Award as the national coach of the year.
Mackie, a 6-1, 240-pound senior from Miramar, Florida, led the Ivy League in tackles per game at 9.6 with 86 stops in nine contests, plus had the most tackles for the Big Green in seven of his nine games, including a career-high 13 against Columbia and again in the 31-7 victory over Princeton that pulled Dartmouth into a first-place tie with the Tigers. The two-time Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week also posted 8.0 tackles for a loss, 1.0 sacks, an interception that he returned 28 yards, two pass breakups and three quarterback hurries.
Teevens, Dartmouth's Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach, guided the Big Green to their third straight 9-1 season and second consecutive Ivy League title. Dartmouth led the Ivy League in fewest points allowed (14.7 per game, seventh in the FCS), not to mention third-down conversion percentage (44.3), completion percentage (68.8), fewest passes intercepted (3), passing defense (159.9 yards per game), punt returns (12.75 yards per return), red zone defense (64.0 percent), rushing offense (193.7 yards per game), passing efficiency (155.91) and total defense (271.0 yards per game). In the final regular-season polls, the Big Green were ranked 19th by Stats Perform and tied for 20th in the coaches poll.
In the most recent season for Dartmouth in 2019, Teevens was a finalist for the Robinson Award as well, plus was named the New England Coach of the Year (as selected by the New England Football Writers Association) and the Ivy League Coach of the Year as chosen by his peers.
This is the 27th season for the Buck Buchanan Award and 35th for the Eddie Robinson Award. A 50-member, national media panel will select the winner of each award — as well as the Walter Payton Award (offense) and Jerry Rice Award (rookie) — which will be announced on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas, on the eve of the FCS championship game.
Notes: Dartmouth has had a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award in each of the last three seasons the team has played. Cornerback Isiah Swann '20 was a finalist in both 2018 and 2019, finishing as high as fifth in the final tabulations in 2018.
