WILLIAMSBURG, Va. —
Brian Mann, a member of the Dartmouth Class of 2002 and a former record-setting Big Green quarterback, was officially introduced as the 30th athletics director at the College of William & Mary on Thursday. He will formally begin his new position on Aug. 9 after serving as a special assistant to the president for athletics while transitioning to Williamsburg.
William & Mary president Katherine Rowe said, "With the selection of
Brian Mann as William & Mary's next director of athletics, the university will benefit greatly from his exceptional professional and personal leadership experiences in intercollegiate athletics. He has a wonderful habit of exceeding goals at top institutions, which also is a hallmark at William & Mary."
A native of Canton, Massachusetts, Mann passed for a program-record 2,913 yards in his final campaign in 2002. He also set Big Green single-season marks for pass completions (253) and attempts (423) that season, and he is still third all-time in career passing yardage (5,912) and touchdowns (33), as well as second in completions (560) and attempts (952).
After earning his bachelor's degree in history, Mann played football professionally in the Arena Football League for four years before entering the marketing and business world while also keeping his hand in football as a broadcaster and sideline reporter for NESN.
Mann returned to his alma mater in 2009 as the director of football operations, a position he kept for two years, then transitioned into the role of assistant athletic director for external relations to help direct the department's stewardship of athletic alumni in support of annual giving programs. After completing his master's in liberal studies in 2013, Mann was named the managing director for leadership giving in the office of advancement where he was tasked with securing major gifts for the college.
In 2014, Mann left Hanover for Rice University, originally as the director of development then elevating to chief development officer and senior associate athletics director. The University of California, Berkeley, hired him as its CDO/senior associate AD in 2019.
Mann and his wife, Hilary, have a 10-week-old son, Russell, both of whom will join him soon in Williamsburg.
