HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth athletes have seen quite a bit of action over the first few days of the Tokyo Olympics. Let's take a look at how things stand thus far (all dates and times referenced are for the Eastern Time Zone).
Madison Hughes '15, captain of the United States men's rugby sevens team, has lifted Team USA to a pair of victories in the first two matches in pool play. On Sunday, Hughes scored seven points with a try and a conversion to pave the way to a 19-14 triumph over Kenya. Then early this morning, he led the squad with another try and two conversions as the U.S. edged Ireland, 19-17. The final game of pool play for Team USA will take place this evening against South Africa at 10:30 p.m., and the quarterfinals will take place early on Tuesday morning.
In the lightweight women's double sculls, Molly Reckford '15 placed third in her heat last Friday, sending her to the repechage on Saturday night. She and her partner, Michelle Sechser, cruised to victory by more than five seconds over Belarus and 13 seconds ahead of host Japan in third. All three of those boats advanced to the semifinals, which were originally scheduled to take place late tonight, but due to expected adverse weather conditions, they will take place on Tuesday night with Reckford competing in the second semifinal at 10:50 p.m. Should she finish in the top three, she will qualify for the medal race on Wednesday at 9:10 p.m.
Dong Seon Kim '12 competed in dressage for South Korea, finishing eighth out of nine riders in his group.
BothIsalys Quiñones '19 of the Puerto Rican women's basketball team and Ariana Ramsey '22 of the U.S. women's rugby sevens team will begin their competitions on Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening, respectively.
